An addendum. . .

The difference between kids and adults looking to learn magic is the polish in the way adults ask for help (and disclosure) and the fact that they can blag their way in because they have the cash to buy tricks!

The other difference between adults and kids is the truth that adults are magic's 'now' and the kids are its future.

In my business, the boss says someting about "suffering the little children to come" i.e. don't stop them but welcome and embrace them. I undertsand that they (kids) can get in the way, but that can be remedied by doing everything we do with kindness!

HTH,

Vic

Hi,
I would also like to request a section for childrens entertainers.

I have been into magic for about 7 or 8 years and over the last few years have been asked to do some magic for neices, nephews, friends kids I now realise that I want to be an excellent childrens entertainer.

I am now working on putting a show together and have read a few of standard books and watched some DVDs.

I will tell you, it is hard work to get a good show together and I have had some excellent help from childrens entertainers including Chubby.

As childrens entertainment is so different from any other kind of magic, I think if there is enough interest it would be helpfull to have it's own section.

Ideas for a mixed party of children and adults?

Postby ab5zn » Jul 25th, '05, 21:45

Thus far I've intentionally concentrated most on adult-oriented magic. Now, though, I have been volunteered to do some magic at an Ecuadorian party in a couple of weeks. Here are some of the types of things I'll do mostly for the adults:

M5 with coins
Floating something or another (I.T. ala Jon LeClare)
Some mentalism stuff
Card tricks
Book/magazine tricks
Genii cards

I'm really not sure what to do for the kids.

Actually, I guess what I really am looking for is a routine or two, either for adults or children or both. I have a number of tricks up my sleeve, but I'm not sure how to link 'em all together in the best way. I don't care for the idea of jumping from one thing to the next.

What I think would be great would be a story that I would tell that would engage the interest of the audience and also connect all of the magic tricks together. You know, "Once upon a time there was a genii (or politician, or guy who owned a restaurant, blah blah blah) ..."

Do y'all (Southern U.S. for "you all") have any ideas you are willing to share?

Also, what's about the right length of time for a magic show for adults? About how many effects would that be on average?

Thank you.
Dave

That all depends on the type of show. If it is on a stage or in a small club then i have varied between 1 and 2.5 hours. If you table hop then it is a different matter. As the number of effects, again that varies, if you have people come up to witness or assist then time is taken up by asking their name, job or other banter. The number also depends on what effects you do, some may take 10 minutes with patter while some may be over in an instant.

I think with adults it is more important to chat with them then keep telling stories. E.g in a resturant, ask how their meal was, are they having a nice time etc.

As for Kids, i find having funny little stories for some tricks may help. When i do strat - o - sphere, i tell a story to go along with it.

I normally combine longer pieces with short/snappy effects to hold everyones attention.

I have been thinking of starting to do kids' parties for extra income and magic experience on the side. I wonder if there are some predeveloped routines for that. I know that you can buy dialogues written for ventriloquism acts. Well, I'd like a plan for doing, for example, a kid's birthday party. I could start with the existing routine, then customize to my taste. At least it would give me a starting point.

I know, I'm asking for a lot.

Childrens entertainer

Postby Danthemagicman » Aug 29th, '05, 16:19

As a Childrens entertainer myself, I feel that children are the ones who enjoy magic the most. The reason for this is that they are gullable and when you are young everything seems magical eg Santa

I entertain now at a Pontins camp regulary and BOY do I enjoy it.
The kids love balloon modeling and the idea of a "wand"

I would be interested in a childrens magic section as I perform my kids show 2-4 times a week! More than my table hopping and full show!

I am on the look out for new effects all the time so repeat customers don't get bored!
