Royal Road to Card Magic annotations

Postby mark lewis » Dec 9th, '19, 02:58

I think I must have mentioned already that I am at present writing an annotated version of the Royal Road to Card Magic. Well, it won't be long now. The annotations have been written. The proofreading has been done. The foreword by Harry Lorayne has been completed and incorporated into the book. Most of the colour photographs have been put into the book. All that remains to be done is for around 30 or so more pictures to be taken and placed in the book. That should only take a few days.

When the book is ready for publication I shall announce the matter in my usual low profile manner.

Here is the first whisper! A tiny snippet from the foreword.

""What a job he’s done! His annotations, updates, wonderfully clear and explicit photos, new ideas, and more, make this an absolute must-have."

Oh, I think you might as well have the entire foreword now since I have posted it elsewhere. Here it is in Harry Lorayne's inimitable style (so you know I didn't write it myself!)

FOREWORD
It has been a long time since I couldn’t sleep when I’d just acquired a new magic book – had to finish reading it before I turned off the bedside lamp and closed my eyes! This book did it!

I don’t know what price Mark will put on this book, but whatever that price I assure you that it will be worth much, much, more for you than that amount!

Yes, of course I’m flattered that he mentions me/my books a number of times – one of my 4-ace effects (with which I’ve fooled magicians all over the world), my Kick DL, behind the back Classic Force (from Reputation-Makers), Lazy Man’s Card Trick (Close-Up Card Magic) – you’ll see them as you keep reading.

Mark has told me that when he was 18 years old “your book CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC, which created a sensation in the world of magic, was a post graduate course in card magic for me --- a large part of my knowledge with cards comes from what I have learned from you and I am happy to pass on a little of what I’ve learned to future generations.”

Yes, of course I’m flattered/ego fed…glad to have been of help – and Mark is paying back/reciprocating with this book. What a job he’s done! His annotations, updates, wonderfully clear and explicit photos, new ideas, and more, make this an absolute must-have.

(Aside from learning some terrific new ideas it brought back wonderful memories for me. I knew Jean Hugard and Fred Braue personally. I know that they’d be very pleased with what he’s accomplished here.)

I don’t want to get specific – mentioning the many items that I found to be so great. It’s better for you to come across all of them as you read, decide for yourself.

So, Mark, what else can I say except – great job! And thank you.

Harry Lorayne.

Indeed. I was quite surprised by it! And Harry tells me that this is the first time he has read the Royal Road. That was the second surprise! And that he didn't recall writing a foreword for anyone else before. That was the third surprise!

Anyway I will be glad when it is finished. It is nearly there now. A labour of love but I don't love the labour!

The first review has come in! This was written on Facebook from a chap who saw me do the material nearly SIXTY years ago!

"I have bought it. I have started reading and just from the first chapter I can see that this is an absolutely marvelous update to this classic book.
The annotations and added photographs are incredibly helpful.
You have created a classic book for all magicians."

The book is now available in printed form. I am delighted it was in ebook format but I never did understand that stuff. Here is the link to the printed book anyway:

A great review came in from a British magician but it is a little long. Let me know if I can post it on this thread or if it should go somewhere else.
