Vernon's Slow Motion Card Vanish

Postby Barefoot Boy » Aug 31st, '20, 05:54

I'm on a serious Vernon kick at the moment. This happens to me every so often. I get an itching to re-explore the thinking of the Professor.

For fun, here is the Slow Motion Card Vanish

He isn't. I have been in touch with him in the spirit world. He wishes you wouldn't do tricks with your feet.

This chap never found it necessary to do tricks with his feet.......................

I can assure you my feet had no involvement whatsoever with my performance of that effect other than keeping me in a vertical plane with respect to the ground.

I think Vernon was referring to your other more recent sleight of foot exhibition. Anyway I rather like this one notwithstanding the rude remarks in the comments about your feet. I thought the remarks were unwarranted since your feet did not actually take part in the presentation.

Honestly, I probably haven't performed that trick since I made that video many years ago. I think it's mainly because I rarely carry my own deck of cards when I go out. I'm always borrowing a deck if one is available, otherwise I'm doing material which doesn't use a pack of cards at all.

Harry Lorayne says he only does tricks with borrowed cards. The trouble with that scenario is where the hell can you borrow cards when you are out and about? Harry uses borrowed cards when he goes to people's homes to perform but I rarely find myself in that position. I hardly ever go to people's homes in the first place. The only people you can borrow cards from are other magicians but who the hell wants to show them magic anyway? They are a bloody awful audience and don't react like normal human beings. I have always carried a deck of cards with me every day of my life. It is true that using borrowed cards are more effective but not being able to borrow the cards in the first place is not terribly effective either. In any event if you perform for the same people regularly they soon realise you are using regular cards.

That Aces video is very effective but not practical for impromptu work because not only do you have to have a deck of cards with you, you also have to have music around with you! I do that trick myself but without the music! It is actually my best trick! The key to getting the strong reaction is to get the spectator to put their hand on the Ace pile throughout the vanishes. That makes up for the lack of music when you are out and about.

A lot of magic you see on video doesn't work in the real world quite so well. Where does one get music for example? And even the Vernon vanish you do is subject to severe restrictions because of angles.

I have always thought it a pity that you don't do more close up magic. You are known more as a mentalist but I have always thought your close up magic to be very good indeed and a pity that you don't focus on it more than you do. It is on an equal footing (I wish I hadn't used that word) with your mentalism.

Thanks.

I've always loved close-up magic and I started with card tricks when I was 7 really.

I suppose most magicians always carry a pocketful of some props with them to be able to perform at the drop of a hat. Perhaps having a deck of cards, a TT, and a few sponge balls in their pockets is enough to spring into action at a moment's notice and perform a nice little routine very spontaneously. I usually only carry some billets, a pencil, and a s**** g******.

With regards to the Slow Motion Card Vanish, it too is very impractical. Although no gimmicks are necessary, as in Macdonald's Aces for example, the trick is only effective for one viewer or for tv, due to the brutally restricting angles. For this reason, I would rarely ever perform this trick. I suppose I will keep it locked away in the back of my mind for the correct intimate moment when I am with just one other person.

For fun, I just thought I'd perform it and post it on Facebook just so I have a record of it.

It is probably a knockout effect for only one person. One advantage is that you don't need to carry an entire deck around with you! Just one card! Perhaps it might even work with one of your business cards which you carry around with you anyway! You can give it away and it probably is easier to do angle wise too I imagine!

Given the amount of practice that effect took on my part, I'm glad I recorded it for future reference. On viewing the trick a few times, I have been flooded with a sudden flash of brilliant inspiration!

I am going to do the trick again, and I might post the video here on this thread. It will be a slow motion vanish using a completely different method and a noticeably larger object with a much more "Paul Pacific" flavour.
