palming a card!

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

First of all, think about using bridge sized cards instead of poker - it is amazing what a difference this can make when first learning palming. You could use the tenkai palm or table palm or other palms, but why not just try to master the basic classic palm? Get a book that has it in, like The Royal Road To Card Magic and study it. Spend a few hours just with a card palmed in the hand, whilst doing normal activities, to try and get used to the feeling. Try not to be conscious of the card - forget it is there - relax the hand and try to keep it as natural as possible; style it on the hand that is empty. If you practice the correct technique for long enough you will eventually overcome it and be able to palm properly.

Misdirection

Postby The Last Deck on the Left » Jul 19th, '05, 22:39

Hi there!

Glad it's not just me then.

I'm learning a torn & restored card routine, and at one point, need to keep an extra bit in my hand. It suggests that it is inserted between the fingers - however my fingers are REALLY skinny too and it just looks so obvious!

However - as many have replied in this thread already - it isn't obvious. It's only obvious to you. Just like another classic item - that sticks out like a sore thumb !!!

Part of a routine I do is where I control the specs card to the top of the deck. They think it's on the table. I end up palming it, and pulling it out of my pocket. When I do the palm, and move my hand to the pocket - I look them directly in the eye and ask them a question. They then look directly at me - the audience eagerly looks directly at the spec to hear their answer. This gives me cover to do the move. (I also make sure earlier on I put my hands in my pockets and bring them out - visibly empty. This puts a subconsious thought in their heads - 'he puts his hands in his pockets when he talks'.

Have you ever been rumbled when palming?
If you haven't performed it yet - just practice it well, and go for it!

:D

This is generally the priciples of magic in most cases (e.g. IT or as saib before TT's).

Just tought i might say that. This is even more the reason to not worry about it :D

Yes... I HAVE been rumbled whilst palming.

This was the moment I realised that in order to do it properly, I wanted the spectator(s)'s eyes to be cast anywhere but my 'dirty' hand.

Misdirection is the real core of much magic, and it's a skill in itself.

But it is VITAL that you learn it, because NOBODY can palm a card and make it totally invisible from all angles.
