You do not need fast hands to present effective magic - even with cards (or coins, etc.).
Quite the contrary actually - as one of the biggest failures that I have noticed with many Magicians (not just amateur or hobbyists) is that they undertake sleights (AND talk) far too quickly! This often leads to confusion from the spectators' perspective. To this end, if they are confused with the plot, then the climax to the final effect will fail miserably.
For a beginners book on general sleight of hand, I cannot recommend more highly:
The Magic Book - Harry Lorayne. This contains card magic, coin magic, Mentalism and a wealth of other excellent material with everyday items.
The Annotated Royal Road to Card Magic - Mark Lewis. The Royal Road To Card Magic (often abbreviated RRTCM) is a planned step-by-step treatise of Card Magic. Mark's Annotations bring it all to life for the 21st Century.
With every best wish for your future success!
