Video Editing

Postby Stephen Ward » Jul 28th, '05, 14:42

I am filming some performance clips for a promo DVD and clips for my website, but i know nothing about editing. Can anyone suggest a good and cheap video editing software. I am using a digital Video camera.

What i will need is clips that i can put onto my website so people can view or download. Thanks

Alot of people here use Windows Movie Maker. It usually comes with windows, but you may need to update it to get the latest features.

However, if you want to buy a Editing Suite, I've had experience with Pinacle Studio 9 and I've found that to be really good, and relatively easy to use, if you have a bit of common sense and know your way around a computer.

All the best,

Thanks! i was thinking about getting a professional to film, edit and produce the DVD master for me but that would probably be expensive.

I second Will's post... Windows Movie Maker is a great little tool, and completely free with Windows XP. You'll need to upgrade to Service Pack 2 for the improved version though. I use it all the time. If you've seen some of Rune's videos he uses it too I think.

You can take a movie file (.avi .mpg etc) and add titles, credits, music and all sorts of effects during the film. When you come to save your finished version, you get a list of saving options. You can save at high quality, or a compressed format, which is ideal for posting and downloading from websites. You have to think of all those people with dial-up who might not be able to download the bigger files.

Of course, if you were getting it professionally done, you could get them to save the finished files in the best format for downloading from websites.

Hope this helps,

Here's a caveat about WMM - you can only save to WMV, which will not help you if you plan to make a DVD (although I think later versions can push the video back to tape, I'm pretty sure you can't save as an AVI or MPEG).

There are a bunch of free editing packages out there, but you tend to get what you pay for. If you go to Game shops they have a software bundle with Pinnacle 9 for 20 quid (and given what else you get, this is a bargain!).

A Google search will bring up a lot of results.

Take care, Ian
