Avice on wrist pulse stopping

Postby Salsa Jack » Aug 28th, '05, 12:10

I do know how this is performed but wondered before attempting it in public is there actually any medical implications of carrying out this effect?

Is it as simple as just doing it whenever, or are there reasons why this may be harmful in any way or its use should be limited?

Cheers.

Um... well, if you know how it's done, then you'll know there are limited medical implications for yourself...

Seems a bit of a strange question though.

Maybe the only thing you would need to think about is anybody copying you... kids etc. The way you present this will overcome this issue though.

Not really sure what else to say...

Why would it be a strange question?

I would of thought that there are no implications but it's worthwhile to check if there are any precautions or other experiences from anyone that they may wish to point out whilst performing this.

Ooh...I love this trick. It was on Channel 4's 100 greatest tricks, and I thought it was brilliant. Where can I find out how to do it? Can any of you guys PM and let me know?

I would think that there is a limit to the amount of time you can do it for.
It can't be healthy to have your bloodflow restricted for too long.
There would be a build up of blood around a certain area after a while (if you know how it's done, you'll know where I'm talking about).

That is what I was asking about to be honest, I would envisage stopping for around 15 seconds but wondered if anyone with a medical background could put forward an argument as to why not or indeed to point out that there are no implications to this if carried out sensibly.

Dont have much of a medical background ... but look at the causes of DVT (Deep Vien Thrombosis) .. you wouldnt want to restrict the blood flow to any part of your body for too long ... fear of clotting and things like that, it would depend on the person and there state of general health, probably not advised if they have a heart condition or somthing like that.

Well thats what I was getting at, I was thinking about blood clots, I don't really want to get into anything even mildy dangerous but if there are no real bad implications for a very limited period I'd be happy to go ahead on a very limited and short timed basis.

Does anyone have a definitive medical view on this?

Yes, I do have an medical view on this. For the extremits you can stopp the blod for about 4 hours before it starts to die. But at that point you will have a huge pain so I'm not suggesting you to do that..4 hours is a maximum but the shorter the stopp is, the better.
But unless you already have some kind of disease it shouldn't be so dangerous...

4 hours, I think we are all fairly safe, then.
I don't know about you guys, but I have no intention of doing it for 4 hours.

It depends on which method you use. If you use the typical method, then I wouldn't do it for too long. But my personal favorite method you can do it indefinately. All it requires is 200mg of cyanide.

I wouldnt think there would be any serios risks involved. Haven't you ever woke up in the middle of the night with "dead arm?" In your sleep you lay on your arm for hours until when you wake up, you can't feel it or even move it until the blood flow returns.
I did it once while donating blood at a blood drive for my church. II give regularly so I knew when the drive was so I was prepared. When the nurse did my screening (pulse, blood pressure, etc.) I said, "wanna see something weird?" She was taking my pulse at the time. I stopped it for about 20 seconds and she freaked out. I told her it was just a trick and that nothing was wrong with me and we had a good laugh.
