Earlier on Friday Nights: at 9.30pm, 10pm,
These should be big, exciting, entertainment formats and events. They could be either shot in studio or on location, should have a sense of originality and innovation and should look and feel distinctive. They will often be talent led and should have a distinct voice and sense of authorship. We occasionally commission shows with a reality element but only if they feature a significant amount of comedy and entertainment. In this important time slot, we will obviously have ambitions for their ratings performance but balanced with the desire to be bold. This is the more mainstream end of our output but what we consider mainstream on Channel 4 still shouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea Eg: Eight Out Of Ten Cats, Rock School, Derren Brown: Trick Of The Mind, Playing It Straight.
Later Night at 10.30pm, 11pm and later
This is the place for new talent and more edgy programming. We want things that are ahead of the pack; things that cause trouble and that make people talk. Again they should be original and innovative, have a distinctive voice and all that sh*te. This is where some of our most interesting programmes are scheduled – obviously we want all our shows to get watched but late on Friday nights is somewhere we can take more risks and try out new and controversial ideas. All broadcasters claim to have distinctive programmes but this is genuinely the timeslot where we commission shows that are often totally unlike any other broadcaster’s. Shows here are likely to be young in focus and the most successful should have both an edgy appeal and a talk of the playground factor. Eg Balls Of Steel, Bo Selecta, The Friday Night Project, Da Ali G Show, Dirty Tricks.
So there you go, if Dirty Tricks is designed to be the talk of the playground/appeal to school kids why is it shown so late at night?!
I e-mailed Ch.4 and asked if there's any news on the missing 6th programme (it's referred to on their website along with the other 5) and will let you know if and when they reply.
