It was a shame that most of the magic in this episode appeared to require very little skill (as in misdirection, sleight of hand etc.) and instead, it was the presentation that was concentrated on.

I said most and not all.

I'll watch this week in the hope that it does get better but I feel that this type of magic shows just how skilled Derren Brown is at achieving both.

I think it was good entertainment. I was not blown away with the magic, but I think that because we know how the stuff is done, we are a very hard audience. I would like to see more close up stuff (cards. coins etc.) but that is a purely selfish comment. I think all lay people would have enjoyed it. I will be watching again next week.

I'd beg to differ ... i only have an understanding of card magic .. as far as these illusions i didnt know the technique behind them, however the only way that could have been done is using props.

but .. i WILL be watching it next week to see if there is an improvment ... however i wont hold my breath ... i doubt even the great houdini would hold his breath on that one.

Absolute tosh !! have we gone completely bonkers with magic shows ? Lets have some of the women sawed in half. Plenty of blood and gore illusions but yep lets be PC and heaven forbid we cant these days actually put a woman in one of these illusions. Dont people realise we need something for hetrosexuals not the bloomin copperfeel and David Plain gay societies.

That should stir this conversation up a bit  But frankly im fed up with seeing illusions done avoiding female assistants these days.

Well, that's one way to look at it, I suppose!

I never thought I'd see anyone complaining about the lack of leg shown in a magic show! Nice one. You've made me chuckle, anyway.

Well there is a whole worldwide community on the web via yahoo groups that are dedictaed to Fans of magic illusion performed with Female assistants. These have been going since the birth of the internet. But generally have had to swap footage, ideas etc on archive performances rather than managing to see anything new generated through TV today.

2 websites also exist that are running on the damsel in distress illusion themes http://www.themagictheater.com/ and http://www.evilmagician.com

Against what popular belief seems to be, us blokies still get excited about putting the lovely ladies in the boxes. LOL

Classicillusionfan,

That last site certainly brings a new meaning to magical exposure

Hell, I can't find a girl fully clothed to get in a box, never mind one that isn't :?

I was quite impressed with the show as a whole.

Jonathon's escape was great. It was nice to see something that wasn't all handcuffs and straitjackets.

To say that the stuff wasn't all new, well no I guess most of the tricks were done before. But hey, isn't all magic either a production, vanish, transposition, penetration or mentalism anyway?

The only truely new things are the way things are performed, rather than what is being performed.

Just my thoughts.

Well I enjoyed most of it, and I stress the word most. I understand your point of view SirRawlins but i just wanted to be entertained. And when did you ever see a 'sketch show' where you enjoyed every item. Some will be good, some less so. Though I must admit, I recorded it on Sky+ andwatched some bits like the knife through arm suicide thing at fast speed to get through it, and I think it actually improved!

I just feel sorry for the goldfish!

Halfway through tonites show ... and I'm much happier ... seems to be grossly improved over last weeks, all they need do now is get rid of the swearing, and get a few new presenters (i refuse to call them magicians) and i will be more than happy!

Pete is a scream, liked his needle through arm, nicly done ... also enjoyed the escipology scene ... lets see what the second half brings!

Oh yeah thanks (I think), I forgot. What am I doing here writing about it when I could be watching? Maybe to say I forgot does say something about the show then. I'll sign off and go watch then on your latest recommendation, SirRawlins, and report back!

lol .... no probs Derek ... i almost forgot myself ...

so, the second half! ... hmm ... still better than last week, although sword swalling wasnt as good as the crossbow routine.

This weeks show WAS much better than last weeks, although, in the old style Rawlins fasion i am going to pick holes in it ...

On ALL of the vanishes done behind sheets they made a few errors, I'm not an illusionist but it was quite obvious ...

when they vanished the girl on the bed; you saw her roll over and when he scooped the "girl" in his arms she appeared to be VERY light.

when they covered the guy sat on the chair; he appeared to turn into a 2D shape and wobble back and forth!?

lol .... again, I'm not a fan of the two guys that did those routines ... but the rest of the show was much improved.

Dirty Tricks

Postby cards » Oct 15th, '05, 00:06

Much better than last weeks show. Its obvious this is not a close up magic show so i' ve given up looking for skill.
The outside bit with the girl I think is clever cos the tricks are trying to do something, make the guy feel jealous / freaked out. Its an interesting way of getting strong reactions from the punter. Forget the usual illusion methods, the magic actually has a meaning. Or with the rubiks cube it was a well crafted sketch and it all made sense.

Dont know why they have such a big box to produce a small animal at the start though? And its lips dont move.
