Sponge ball slight-of-hand

Hi, I'm new to the forums. I'm 17, and have been pratciging magic tricks since I was 6. Especially slight of hand (close up) magic and reading eveyr book available. I'm especially good at mis direction, but sometimes I make a mistake and they look at the other hand. i gotta work on this.

Anyway, I'm very good at it.

When I saw a video, it said you could master the technique (pretending to put it into your hand, called the pentition vanish or something) in about 5 minutes. Is this true?

I really don't think so. Do you want to know why?

With my rountine, I show the magic to them. I show them how to do it, and they can't.

None of them can.

It also took me much longer than 5 minutes, heck, even longer than week. I'd pratice in front of the mirror for hours. So much that, when I was showing it to them, I'd look in front of me, not at my hand that didn't have the ball.

I also can't find any forums here that aren't in the UK. Bummer, I live in the US. Time zones suck, dont they?

I'm not good on patter. It can actually sell the trick.

Unfortunately.

So how long does it take?

I can take the ball, manipulator it from a petition vanish ( to where its in your curled fingers) to a thumb clip, effortlesly. Sure, this takes some pratice, but I think its better, and I recommend. It has its caviets, though:

The good:
Your hand may look more natural, despite your forefinger and thumb sticking together.

The bad:
Sometimes its easily to flash the ball.
Its harder to do. (I think..)

The other way:
Its kinda hard to flash the ball, if you're careful

The bad:
Most people probably won't notice it, but to me, it looks very unnatural. I prefer the other way.

The good:
Much less likely to flash the ball.

So how much pratice does it took? remember, it took me along time to perfect it.

I never seemed to have much trouble though; maybe its because I praticed so much?

I'm very good with them. I hope to perhaps become a magician with close up magic in vegas. Yeah it sounds far fetched, but I'm really good( at least I think so)

so I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

Hi Sponge and welcome to TM.

Personally, I don't take any notice of the marketing behind tricks. If it says five minutes then fine!

I judge the trick on the actual effect and the 'wow' factor. If it then takes 5 minutes, day, weeks or months to perfect then so be it.

I suppose that some things you can learn quickly but after the learning, it takes much longer to perfect to a standard where you can perform it.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Wow, thank you. That was a long wait :P. I live in america, as I said, so the time zones are quite different. I like this forum. Unfortunately, there are no forums for magic in the US.

Yes, I see this..the wow factor for sponge balls are quite great.

However, it kinda ircks me. I have a video and a few other sources that say it will take about 30 minutes, and you can do it just as good. This man is a professional. It took me months, even years, to get very good at it. To manipulae it into a petition vanish grip, then to a thumb clip, and then back takes pratice! Also making your hand look natural is kinda hard.

See, if its this easy? Then why can't anyone do it? With sevearl of my close friends, I've actually violated one of the rules of magic. I showed them how to do it! Heh. I actually did this to see if they could do it. They couldn't. They were 19, 18, 15, respectively.

I'd say you'd need t pratice it for hours a day for at least a week, before you could perform it. Maybe longer.

Also, misdirection takes pratice.

There's at hing in magic, "First time is a trick, second time is a lesson." or something similiar. The more you show the tricks to someone, the more they are apt to look where you don't want them to look.

When I showed it to them a second, or third time, and I was looking at the hand which didn't have the ball, while slowly moving my other hand down (making no sharp movements to attract attention), one of the people there actually purposely looked at the other hand, and saw me put it in.

:P

I looked through magic sites, and none had any suggestions on how hard it is. The only ones that did was one site, where it listed sponge balls as "Intermediate, Skill level 3." and it said "Definitely takes pratice."

There's this onet rick, with coin magic, and its gimmick, that I absolutely can't do. Its called melting quarter through hand ors omething. Its an extremely hard illisuion. It actually consists of a cut in half half dollar coin (US 50 cent piece), and it is, very , very difficult.
