Postby MagicTom » Feb 6th, '06, 20:34

Hi Guys,
I have recently started learning this trick.

Does anyone else do this

Can anyone advise me on this and also if anyone can help me make it "my own" I'm still copying the magician i saw.

I have had one idea friom someone else that would make it personal but i want more ideas so i can maybe mix / choose the best etc!

Thanks
ToM!

Hmm, can you describe the trick?

Do you mean he 'turned' a walnut into an egg? Or made a banknote in a wallet?

I've no idea, sorry.

0k here's what happens

The magician borrows a note - spec signs it

The magician then folds it into a very small square and places it into 1 of 3 envelopes. Chosen by spec.

Shuffles envelopes.

Spec picks 1 envelope. Magician burns / shreads the other 2.

Spec - opens his envelope - his note isnt there. Assuming it was in the other envelope that was burnt / shreaded. Oh dear.

Magician says he will pay spec back. He then takes a cup. And produces an egg from under cup.

Then he cracks the egg.

Inside egg is a walnut.

The spec then stands on walnut. Inside walnut is his note signed by him.

Its in one of Alan Shaxtons books!

this effect is a classic of magic, Pre dating Alan by at least a couple of hundred years!.

over the years it has appeared in many books, Its Probably in Hoffmans modern.

Its One of Paul Daniels standard's , and is usualy the opening effect in his Hot chairs routine.

It's also the basis of Tommy wonders bird act, with the lemon.

I ... want ... it ...

I have searched for Alan Shaxton and Hoffman on Google, Amazon, Penguin, Magicbox etc with no luck

Can anyone tell me where I can get the book that references this trick? I'm sure that it'll be too difficult for me, but it sounds just the ticket.

Where else can we now get our sachets of 'Sleight of Hand' powder if not at Penguin?

This is of no help at all but I actually saw this performed in the street (covent garden) in the Summer. I never managed to chat to the magician because he was swamped by people throwing monesy at him.

Its a very good effect and works really well on the street.

All the best,

Here's what I would do if I wanted to make this trick more individual to me:

Although I'm not entirely familiar with the method (I have seen Bill Malone's version of the Bill in Lemon and will assume it is similar to this only with more work to do) I would first think about something different to find the note in from an egg and a walnut (just so I could ridiculously feign some "originality").

Then I would find a better reason to bring out an egg that mysteriously contains a walnut (or whatever I've decided to use) than to give them their money back. Bill Malone's way of doing this is hilarious as he says "you lost $19 but here you can keep this lemon" as he gives them a one dollar note and produces a lemon from his shoe. With a bit of imagination there are some fantastic comedy moments waiting to happen here.

Finally, just for that extra bit of "PAZAZ" (Don't know what that means) would end up with a random peice of paper being found folded up in whatever I produced instead of the signed note, Leave it on a table or on the floor, light it and step back. From the flames, their signed note magically appears. I'm not sure how well bank notes survive wrapped up in flash paper as I don't really use it but I'd be willing to try it to end a great effect such as this with such a visually startling ending.

Hopefully that will give you some ideas. I'm not exactly the most original mind in the world though, I'm sure there are other's here who have much better ideas.

Banlnote In Walnut

Postby Allen Tipton » Feb 10th, '06, 17:46

:) Aporia. The Alan Shaxon book is called My Kind Of Magic, pages 37 to 40. The book was published by Goodliffe Publications (Abra mag)
The set up and preparation I think you will find a bit exacting. Streamlined & polished though the Shaxon version is; it's really a stage or cabaret version.
Magic Tom: Why not try and work out your own. It's not that difficult.
Peter Warlock published a fine version in the OLD , The Magician Monthly Magazine which used a note, a walnut, a lemon, a grapefruit and a small wooden square tube, called a chimney. It's on pages 90 & 91, The Magician Monthly August 1939. Vol. XXXV (35) No. 9.
You'll have to ask older magicians at the Club if they have a copy. It's worth a look as all Peter W's work is practical.
