repeating a trick

Postby GQ » Mar 7th, '06, 14:44

Now I know you're not supposed to repeat a trick twice in a row for the same spectator, but when I do a trick for a real hot girl or a hot group of girls and they go.. wow, do that again, do that again.... most of the time I can't resist *I'm weak! haha

I know doing the trick again, causes the chance of being caught being and a greater level and that the 2nd time around, they watch more closely, but i've been fortunate enough not to be caught...

So.. i ask, what do you guys/girls say or do to not repeat the same trick for them. good rebutals

THanks!

I'd say don't.

It is hard to resist sometimes but much worse would it be if the hot girl found out the method?

When people want you to repeat a trick just show them something else equally as impressive.

I find immediatley going into a new effect works for me. When they do it again, either just start a new trick or say "If you liked that then this is gonna freak you out".
I always have the tempation to repeat an effect that has been recieved well but either they will still be impressed but not as much or will see something they didn't the first time around. You must resist....be strong

I know Id say a day is fine. Its aproblem in quicksucession because they remember the trick clearl enough to look for other things.

Some tricks I'd wait even longer - the biddle trick for example which relies on the spectator to not really know what to expect.

EDIT: You can of course repeat trick if you can accomplish the same effect by a different method. According to RRTCM

I've learnt that lesson too. If you are starting to get the reputation by your friends as someone who does magic then I'm afraid you will never be able to leave the house again without pockets full of stuff.

Very true greedoniz. Though, if you learn some great car and coin tricks the problem is easier to solve.

Always in my pockets now:

TT
Silk
Deck of bikes
Stealth wallet
D'lites (just for the look on peoples faces)
and just at the moment Twisted Sister because it is new to me and I like it .

I used to carry coin unique but it has got damaged I think from being in my pocket and I am now using it more sparingly because it is an expensive thing to replace

Good resources for impromptu magic - Martin Gardner's 'Encyclopedia of impromptu magic' and Greg Wilson's 'On the spot'.
I also find having worked through John Fisher's Body magic really valuable in situations like that.
Some other effects include elastic band routines, or any ring on string - you're bound to find someone with a ring and you can use a shoelace if needed.

Generally if someone asks to see something again - it's cos they want to try and figure it out. Change the subject and show them something else or just leave them in suspence - it builds the mystery. Rather leave them wanting more than wishing you'd stop. Quit while you're ahead and all that..

Show another trick, or use a different method for the same effect, if you know it, of course.

"Don't show a trick twice" isn't an absolute rule, though. It all depends on the method and your skill. Dai Vernon fooled Houdini with the same trick 8 times after all, and it was Houdini (!), not a layman. If you are absolutely sure that your technique is flawless, and the secret of the trick is not one of those that are easily guessed, then go ahead, repeat it. But only then!

That's what I would say too.

Never do a trick twice, unless you can do it with a very different method!
If the audicence knows what's coming than they would figure the method out much faster...
