Magic Tuition 'Ya or Na?'

Postby GMD_10 » Mar 27th, '06, 22:28

I'm off for some magic tuition tomorrow.

I wanted to get some views on what people think of this as a 'speedier' and more effective way to learn the tricks of the trade.

As an 'Eager Newbe' whose fumbled around with self working tricks for the last 6 months is this the way forward to best learn, or am I wasting my money?

I'm keen to know your thoughts

Thanks Gavin

Depends on who's doing the teaching and what their experience and level of skill is. Overall, I can't see that it would do any harm and I'm open minded about it

i've found tuition to be the quickest way to learn. i've taught a few people a basic introduction and a few tricks and in my experience it's quicker than books (by a long way)
although rather than tuition, DVDs really increase the learning speed over that of just books.

Magic tuition?

Sounds like money for old magician's rope.

Be sure to check the credentials of your tutor!!!

Well it definately helped.

Take on borad your points about making sure the magician is a good one. He's a member of the magic circle. His names Domonic Reyes and he's pretty darn good in my opinion.

He's helped me to get started on a few great moves. (Hopefully given a week I'll be able to fool the nieces and nephews properley with sleight of hand now and not always with misdirection)

Even if it were money for old magicians rope, the tricks learnt were right for my level (starting out).

Regarding joining a group anyone no of one that meets in the south? Sussex/Hampshire way?

Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Gav

I'm glad that you had a good experience from this. As for what PDJamez posted - never a truer word spoken (or written in this case)

I know that there is a magic association in Basingstoke and that they have a web site.

Try to find a Bananafish post as I'm fairly sure that he has a list of magic societies at the foot of his posts.

Cheers thats a useful link - There seems to be a fair few in my area.

I know doubt would need to do a performance before they accepted me so I'll hopefully fire off an email in a couple of weeks once I've got a well versed routine together.

Not necessarily to start with!

Check out a thread on magic societies using the search function and you'll find a variety of experiences that you may find usefull.

For those that don't know - Dominic Reyes is the store owner of http://www.magicshop.co.uk. An online store I've NEVER had problems with. I thoroughly recommend them.

I know what you're thinking, and no, I'm not on commission...
