Street Magic - Lisence?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Exactly! Just look at Johnny Rotten!

Personally I busk for donations (I don't ask for money, but it's nice if I'm given it). For me this is a mix of magic, balloon modelling and whatever else takes my fancy and draws a crowd. I place a hat on the floor and hope... :)

However, one point to consider when performing is to make sure that you are not on priveate property as nealry all indoor shoppiong centres are.

You can be turfed out at a moment's notice and if you don't go then your trespassing.

Bye the way, good thread this one

Mmm Betty Page...

Who...?

And why? lol

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

Flash wrote:Actually in this country they can! It's a performance and the government has just brought in a law that says that all performance requires a licence.. Performing without a licence can land you with a hefty fine/prison term (although this hasn't yet happened to anyone to my knowledge) Stupid isn't it!?!

Hm ... so if I tell a joke in the UK it can be considered performing as a comedian and I can be fined or land in prison?

Oh, yes! Walking down the street is actually performing, too. We can see actors doing it in movies all the time and the walker just immitates the actors and thus replays a movie scene!

As an update on this for those interested in 'busking'. Sheffield City Council now alledgedly ask you to apply for a buskers license on the day you propose to busk, being the wonderful and liberated city it is this is supposedly easy to get.
I am informed that Blackpool are now auditioning people before granting a street entertainers license. As I started my career as a street entertainer in Blackpool this worries me as it would have severely put me off.

if shopping centers are privare property and if you get permission then are you working under their entertainments licence? (most centers down south have entertainment on certain days)
Also if you show you are good, ie perform for the manager surley you could argue that he is getting free entertainment for his customers?
Must be worth an ask. Plus more importantly (especialy for a soft southern nancy like me) if it rains you will be dry:lol:

Thankfully living in Belfast we can pretty much get away with a hell of a lot. The PSNI are too busy chasing Death Riders and the like that they dont stop us entertainers doin our thing. I busked for a while with me mates band to get drink money for the quiz in the now long gone bar (Anthropomorphic Entity I miss that place).

Yep, as far as I'm aware you should be ok doing this. I've worked quite a few shopping centres since the new regulations came in... Although normally they are paying me oodles of cash to do so.

ok I'm a professional street performer i've got first hand experience of this. i've performed all over the uk and have never had a license and never been stopped i've actually set up right next to a policeman and he stood and watched and laughed and joined in with the show. the reason the license was introduced was so that the police could get rid of the drunken fool singing at the top of his voice on a sunday morning if your out there entertaining and doing a good job then your not going to get stopped. i know performers who have blocked off buchanan street in glasgow (the biggest shopping street in glasgow) totally blocked off and the police didn't bother at all. so don't worry about it. basically if you get stopped just say sorry officer and go and set up somewhere else but u'd have to be awful to get stopped
