How does this trick sound?

Postby Mooch » Sep 1st, '06, 23:57

Hi,
As you may or may not know, I've been trying to come up with a load of different tricks over the last couple of days. As you can also see from the videos, most of them aren't very good at the moment. However I came up with a trick I've not seen done before, and that I find very powerful and effective.
It involves a needle and your hand. You show the needle is real. Show the hand is real (for really tough spectators). You then proceed to slowly push the needle through the top of your hand. The spectator can see your other hand pressing the top of the needle as it goes down, through your hand. When the needle is all the way through, you lift up your hand and show the needle, and then pull it the rest of the way through.
The people that I have shown it to so far have been very impressed, and have had no idea how it has been done. I'll try to get a video up showing the effect, but after that I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm not yet up to good enough performing standards for almost all the tricks I know, and I don't really want to give the trick away for free right now. However I've not made a name for myself anywhere yet, so attempting to sell it is probably a bad idea as well.
Has anybody got any ideas, suggestions, comments, questions or anything else for me?
Sorry to make you read through all that then spring some questions on you.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read the post, I really do appreciate it.
Thanks again,
Harry.

well the trick sounds cool
i would keep it to my self
but i defietly want you to give it away

well here is what i think you should do
show us how to do it
but dont tell people you know about the instructions and impress people on the street and you friends

this will give you credid that you made the trick just in case someone figures it out and posrt it

No, don't show us how you do it, work on it and keep working at it until you have ironed out any glitches. This will come through many performances. Then when you have a method which is foolproof and an effect which is visually stunning should you think about sharing it with others.

There is a similar effect by the name of Needle Through Arm, which is precisely what it claims to be.

From Alakazam.co.uk:

The needle thru arm (Dave Powells)
This is undoubtedly the most realistic, mind boggling and chilling mini illusion of this century.
A long hatpin is displayed. The needle is pushed right through the upper portion of the forearm. The needle is pushed back and forth; your spectator can actually see the needle piercing your arm!

Suddenly blood starts to emerge from the wound; you remove the needle and proceed to wipe your arm As a final kicker the magician passes his hand over the wound and it heals itself!

This is gruesome but your audience will love it!

An article which may be of use as well:

Kenton Knepper had some ones of a similar nature on Online-Visions.com too but they seem to have been taken down now :? Oh well.

Keep at it, keep learning and performing! You're on the right track :).

Well I've seen it done by David Blaine before, as a geek style stunt in which a needle/pin does go through your hand.

Heck I was stupid enough to try it, I did get it into my hand and it was about 1cm in, but I didn't want to go any further in case I hit a nerve or something.

I bet you do! :x
You're going to learn at some point that magic relies on secrets, not sharing.

Thanks for all the replies again. I think I'll do as Cardza suggested, and keep it to myself for a while. I'll try to get a video of me performing it up though, so you can actually see what it looks like.
Thanks again,
Harry.

Don't put a video up until you are confident you can do it without anyone seeing your method.

Thanks Darrel. I think I've got it now so that you can't see the method, so I've put a video of it up:

I'm sure that a few, if not more, of you will be able to figure out how it is done, but I'm hoping it will fool some of you ;)
Thanks again for reading.

Hey I checked out the demo's, some quite good stuff there.

I think these creations are most likely best kept to yourself, I haven't seen anything like these and if they are safe to perform then these are great.

All I want to ask is, what is the clean-up like on these effects.

and one bit of critique towards the videos, it looked like the needles went through your flesh very easily, try to struggle a bit and take a bit more time with the "regurgitation" of the needle. If something was stuck in your throat and was as small as a needle, it would take a bit of time and effort to move it to your mouth.

So yea, apart from those few points, your onto a winner.

Thanks Tom, I really appreciate the comments.
The clean up for the effects is very fast, it can be done before the trick is even over, if you are fast :D
As for my performances, they aren't great yet. I'm not currently that good a performer, and still have a lot of work to do on anything, really, until I'm up to decent standards.
And thanks again, I'm really happy that you like the effects :)
