Hey!

I have always been interested in magic, so I thought I would stop by and ask bug you guys, and hopefully one day be able to contribute and help some of the more experienced members. My main reason for posting is that I really wanted to get into card sleights, and tricks. Most of my inspiration comes from the movie Shade, if any of you have seen it.

Anyway I really wanted to purchase a book tonight, and was wondering what book should I start with if I wanted to progress in this category. I heard Card College was good, but it is quite expensive, and wanted to get final confirmation from some experts before I purchased it.

Thanks all!

Hi Rhapsody1447 and welcome to TM.
My first magic book (I got it as a present when I was around 11 or so) was a Houdini book (in Icelandic). Since then I have mainly collected DVDs. But a lot of magicians praise the book Royal Road to Card Magic.
You don't really say much about yourself, but if you are in England (or close) you can get it from NUMS for only £7.45. I don't have it myself, but I've heard so much good about it. :)
Best greetings from Iceland!

Thanks for the Welcome guys, sorry I didn't elaborate a little more about myself.

I am fifteen years old, and I live in Southern California (USA). I actually just met a friend yesterday who knew quite a bit about magic, and claims he has thousands of dollars worth of materials and tricks at home, so I am quite excited about that. Right now, I was working from a few tricks a friend let me borrow, it is quite challenging and is giving my figures everything I can handle.

As I stated previously, I am really into card manipulation and card magic. I am doing my best trying to learn card riffs, breaks, false shuffles, all that good stuff. I am interested in cheat dealing, moreso as a trick I can show off to my friends. Although I do have to say, magic has an interesting way to draw people to you, and completely blow their minds, so I am sure that I will be delving into both worlds of the art.

For now, I purchased Royal Road to Card Magic, and am hoping to progress in that as much as possible as quickly as possible. I see there are a lot of different forums, could one of you point me to the main one? One where I could ask questions or advice, or just join a good, meaty conversation?

Take your time learning from the book. Trying to learn too much too soon is a common mistake many new people to magic make. Good magic comes from careful and slow study of the craft, so try to take your time. Go through each section of Royal Road slowly and keep to that section until you are smooth and confident with the material contained within. The best of luck.

There is no main forum, they are covering different fields. And... if you came here to learn how tricks are done, you will be disapointed. Magicians don't reveal magic, they perform :)
But if you have a magic you want tips with, you can go to to Support & Tips, but don't forget the rules, don't ask how a magic is done and don't reveal too much in the forum either. Reading reviews about magic tricks is great, because then you get more inside knowledge before buying an certein magic. Also talk about magic in general in Magician Talk and about conventions and events in Events forum. I'm pretty sure you will like it here if you are truly interested in magic.
And also... you don't become a magician in a week. You have to practice a lot and make mistakes to learn from, plus seeking advice and share knowledge. That is why this forum is so nice :)

Welcome to Talk Magic.

In my mind, there are four books that are manditory for every great magician's library.

Royal Road to Card Magic
Expert at the Card Table
Expert Card Technique
Bobo's Modern Coin Magic

Hi, welcome to talkmagic!
The Royal Road is an excellent choice!
I'm sure there was a study guide posted for it on here ages ago. Or maybe it was a link to it. Saddly the search function isn't being too helpful, but I'll keep digging around for it.
