I bought this a while ago and never used it. It is indeed different to a glorpy.
I don't know if it's the same item Craig talks about, but it is Richard Osterlind's reworking of an older effect. I know he talks about it in more detail in the instructions, but I don't have them to hand.
As a solid manifestation, it's quite good. Unlike many glorpies, it uses a perfectly normal white handkerchief (apparently) and is the stronger for not looking like a prop. However, I was surprised that Richard's performance of it was almost manic and involved literally bashing the 'ghost' with a spoon to show that it is solid. I think a spookier, slower performance might enhance the effect.
If you want to do spirit writing, I'd say stick with a glorpy.
I should point out that there's nothing wrong with it; I haven't used it because I've had other things I wanted to pursue. However, I think there's a danger of it being almost like a stunt, or a puzzle, rather than magical.
