Street Magic

Postby robalex23 » Nov 13th, '06, 16:50

Hi this is my first time posting a message, so Hi everyoneive just recently started swaying towards street magic performance and i am now writing an essay on audiences and magicinas. i was just wondering if anyone had any input into why magicians, espesially street magicians, choose specific participants as there audiences. i have very limited knowledge as i have only been performing street magic a short while and any information will help me greatly, not only in my paper but in choosing my audince when i perform. Thanx
Rob

We have a Miscellaneous (or even Support and Tips) section where I'm sure this post will soon end up. Putting it in Reviews is just annoying.

Robalex.. your first post should ideally be an introduction... so please pop over to that part of this forum and say hi, and let us know a bit about yourself..

Secondly, please be mindful of where you post. As said above, there is a support and tips section where this might be more appropriate.. or even miscellaneous..

Please take a litle time to look over the forum and familiarlise yourself with your new surroundings..

All that aside, welcome to TM

I've actually already introduced myself in the appropriate forum.

Apologies for putting this in the wrong forum.

Rob.

It can be tough to find specs at first....but as time wears on you get to be a fairly good judge of body language etc.....

Watch for small groups of people....saftey in numbers puts them at ease and more likely to say yes....and all you need is one in the group to say yes and you are set to go.....the "yes" person will convince the others to watch.

If people are walking quickly, wearing business attire (suit, etc) they are likely not going to be willing or able to spare time....so avoid them.

Smokers are almost always a social group......if you find someone smoking, they are simply standing around passing time and will almost always say yes.

Get a feel for it..........you will see that your confindence in choosing good specs will grow, and the NO's will shrink. It can also have plenty to do with how you approach....don't walk up timidly and then start showing them your longest effect. Quick and visual is key for the opening to grab their attention and get them involved!

Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions

I've paid my dues in this area. I've gotten a fair share of looks. Most of what I learned are from experience but it also helped watching other people.

For me, the key is enthusiasm. It's highly contagious. I genuinely try to learn something about people when I approach them and listen to them when they want to speak. And, I'm honest with them. I tell them that I'm working on a trick recently and ask them for help and they often are eager to help you.

I usually approach people who are waiting. I try eye contact first. I like approaching mixed groups as they are more inclined to enjoy it.

As for choosing participants...I've been thinking about this one. I can't say I have a rule. I don't choose drunk people for handling cards. I don't choose older people that may have problems reading for some effects where that's essential. But that's about it.

I've chosen all personalities before. From the enthusiastic to the cynic. From shy to the outgoing. There are pluses and minuses for different types of personalities.

I'm a bit rusty though, to be honest. I haven't performed on the streets in a long time.

Hope that helps.
