So far i have only learned magic from books i find in the library and watching videos of people doing sleights to figure out how tricks are done. How far will this get me? I have a large enough knowledge of card tricks to see one and generally guess how it could be done (though a lot of them still evade me...) is there any other way to get tricks inexpensively? I don't really have any money to buy tricks with...

and more on topic, when i do an invisible pass, a lot of the time one or two cards will stick and get stuck to the bottom, which doesnt interfere with the trick but it makes a noise that some people might hear, any tips?

Believe it or not, you can learn a ton from books! I understand you dont have much extra money, but there are some inexpensive e-books out there. If you have absolutely no money though, you might have tough go, but I am sure that everyone here will be willing to help however they can. Please understand that we wont tell how a trick is done, but instead guide you and give advice. Just PM or email me if you need anything!

As far as your pass is concerned...

I also have trouble with passes, usually the classic pass. If you are being outed by the noise of the cards (i get it too) just try to misdirect or talk over it. Even better, act like Emeril and yell Bam! or something like that. You'll get it down in time. Best of luck.

You can also ensure you use some well timed patter to cover any unwanted noise....providing it/or your patter don't sound like a herd of elephants!

I spent the first 8 months of magic.. with no books, only one dvd that touched on a number of sleights.. 8 months later.. Royal Road to Card Magic for less than a tenner.. and Ive improved dramatically in a short space of time..

This book will improve your sleights no matter what stage you are at.. its what the bible is to Christians!! Its never outdated!

For the pass problem, I too agree with talking over it and misdirecting.

Of course if you use it in your Ambitious Card Routine... gather everyone round and say "Shhh... listen closely... hear that? That's your card jumping to the top. Go on. Turn it over..."

You can try using older cards. You know those decks that you've used for ages and are 'soft' and 'sticky' now? Those. These decks make far less noise than 'clicky' new decks, and they're also far, far less prone to the odd cards problem (because the 'blocks' stick together). Really, those packs that you'd probably bin are as great for doing a pass as they are terrible for doing an Erdnase.

I tried for a while to learn from watching others.. and sure if you have a basic knowledge of sleights you'll be able to kind of figure it out..
but if you really want to perform them right with the exact right technique.. you really need to buy the trick..

its those small details that you can't figure out when watching someone else that makes the difference between nice trick.. and WOW!

Interesting thing about our library-all the magic books are in the children's section! I checked them out anyway-and naturally, I have bought a lot of books-I really need to STOP buying books!
On another topic-I bought a Haunted Key, but I have discovered that I can do the trick with an ordinary large soup spoon-really does work well-better than the key, actually.

Can anyone suggest a magic book that i can buy ( a physical one, not an e one) books are generally not only cheaper than dvds, but i can also find them at a library if im lucky. The reason i like books is that they explain how something is done, so i can see it done online in a preview and figure out the style from that.

It is very unlikely that your library will carry specialist magic books...all the ones I've been to certainly don't anyway. What are you looking for? With cards, go for The Royal Road to Card Magic - bargain at about ten pounds.

When it comes to style - don't imitate, innovate! Find your own way of presenting your magic, don't be a clone of another performer .

Haha i meant like, when i do a riffle force, i read how to do the method in a book, but saw someone else preform it so i knew how it was supposed to look. And thanks for the tip, i'll look into it.
