It actually used to be called "Le Tourniquet" and that is exactly how you will see it described in older books. I am sure that is where the term "French" drop came from.

Maybe they call it something like Basic Coin Vanish, and saying 'The Drop' to them in their language is actually really offensive.

The Belgians call French Fries, Belgian Fries so they may well call the French Drop the Belgian Drop.
Useless Information #1: French fries are not French but frenched meaning cut lengthways before cooking.
Useless Information #2: Frenched and then fried potatoes were introduced to Britain by a Belgian.

I seem to recall (it might have been from QI) that fish & chips as a dish in its own right was introduced to England in the 17th century by Spanish Jews.
