Double reality

Postby Soren Riis » Jan 13th, '07, 17:48

I noticed double reality (even triple reality!) is used quite frequently in modern television (as well as stage) mentalism. However am aware of almost nothing serious written on this topic and as far as I remember is not discussed in the standard texts on mentalism. I would br greatful if any of our many expert mentalist cound give me some pointers on this (maybe if needed as a pm).

I think it's usually referred to as 'dual reality', if you are searching for it.

It is used and mentioned in quite a few popular tomes, such as Banachek's PK Touches and The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr Faust. I don't think there has ever been a text devoted to effects involving solely dual reality routines or theory, but it would make a very interesting read. I believe that Visions may have an article or two regarding it and its use as well.

True, it's missing from 13 Steps. Maybe the concept wasn't that well explored or recognised back then? Any of the proper mentalists here care to comment?

Ever ready any of Knepper's material? He makes use of the Dual/Multiple Reality ploy a lot. Wonder Words, Kentonism, Twists and Trances...

Kenton is a great place to start. There's also an odd little book called Hypnohole... I forget the author... in fact, in 10 seconds I may just google it for ya... ;)

Weird... top of Google's list is a TalkMagic entry... not a very positive review, and I agree with most of what's said, but it's as I said, an odd little book!

I've been meaning to order this for a while now - it has had very mixed reviews and sounds like a very interesting, albeit strange, little book. Thanks for mentioning it Seige!

I believe this concept was really put into work by Kenton Knepper. (I could be wrong. But I swear I have heard him and other people credit it to him.) And he is whome I have seen release the most material with it as well.

One thing I might suggest would be studying NLP techniques such as "Reframing" and "Ambiguity" with that result in mind. Just play with it yourself and you should be able to catch on fairly quickly producing your own stuff.

As far as stuff from the magic community, you could try "Kentonism" by kenton knepper. Also from the same, "Twists and Trances" has a few effects with DR. There are more, but I am knackered.

yeah,

as far as I know not many BOOKS utilize dual reality, but mentalist performers have for ages. This is the kind of stuff (in my opinion) that makes mentalism such a damned miracle.

As far as the ealiest publishing of an effect using dual reality, I think the rawest one marketed is definitely Banachek's PK touches.

If I may recommend, the best routine I have run across using duel reality to the highest extent is in Luke Jermay's effect "Touching on Hoy" (which was heavily influenced by Hoy's "The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr. Faust). Its published in Jermay's book "The Coral Fang"

the effect is as follows:

3 (or potentially more) spectators sit in 3 chairs with their eyes closed, each spectator is asked an individual question (mostly pertaining to ANYTHING) after a few minutes of silence the spectators and told the stand up and their 3 exact thoughts and spoken out loud by the performer.

SO EXCELLENT. To those few skeptical of routines of the like, this IS a foolproof, real world, effect with plenty of room for tweaking and spinoffs. To me this is the best effect I use that utilizes the dual reality principle. Highly recommended guys.
