An ADDICTION to buying MAGIC.....

Postby comfortablynumb » Jan 16th, '07, 15:13

Hi all.

Does anyone feel that they are addited to buying magic tricks? I'm sure that like me, you browse your favorite magic catalogue/website and your spoilt for choice on all the great products that are on sale. You spend hours watching trailers for magic tricks and you always say to yourself "How the hell does that work? I would love to be able to do that...Ive gotta get it!!!!!"
so you spend a small fortune on buying some great magic, whilst waiting for it to arrive in the post you are so exicited and your counting the days untill it arrives (a bit like xmas..only better!!)

The day you receive your magic, It feels like xmas all over again  , you rip open the packaging and take out your magic. Quickly read through the insructions, play with the gimmick etc. then after all that exciitment prepare yourself to perform the magic on your friends/family.

Then you get what I call the "magic blues" this is the come down you get after all the big build up. You find your left with a gimmick/knowlegde that you always think you could of come up with yourself, you feel pretty awfull that you had just paid X amount for something that is so simple. You feel slightly stressed out that you should of used the money you paid for the magic to some other use...like....buying the weekly shopping or buying the baby some food! ( :D :D  Your spouse is questioning you about the fact that the food cupboards are empty. You try and cheer her up buy showing them some GREAT MAGIC..but for some reason they arnt impressed!

This week I have been living off Bread and water

To cheer yourself up. You browse your favorite magic shop website..."oh look! a new product!!! that looks amazing!! I gotta have it!! How much?? £70!!! Im sure it will be well worth the price!! "CLICK BUY IT NOW!!!

And so on this viscious circle goes!!!!

Suppose it better than being a Crack head!!!!

It's called CUPS.

The whole ethos behind my NUMS site is to alleviate people of their money on items which they won't say 'What the hell did I waste money on that for'.

I try to stock items which are useful, unique and value for money.

Unfortunately, as a newbie, there's so much rubbish which it's possible to end up buying before you realise that books are the way to go ;)

At least you say you're buying 'great magic' !!!

its a major money trap...especially when you first start off...

what's helped me to some degree (though im still not settled on it) is to define who you are as a magic-performer, and let that kinda dictate what you end up buying...it's helped me cut down...

but not with books  i've always loved books...

Part of magic, that is buying the new "greatest trick ever" then one goes back to books and stuff. I havent brought a gimmick in ages well a certian deck but its a very good deck and i got it from NUMS. I learnt there are 100s of tricks in books, and the most simple of magic is usually the best type of magic.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

CUPS...do not let it take hold...it'll ruin your life...well...ok that maybe an exaggeration but, mrs lmw doesn't like all the purchasing!

I found coming to here is like a CUPS sufferers support! The CA i.e. CUPS Anonymous...

Also, I can vouch for Seige's site!

Good luck in your purchases (books/learning media is the way forward!) as for food remember there's always Lidl, Netto / Farm Foods etc!

Remember: Purchase Aware, the government supports Purchasing in moderation only!

if you want a serious tip, and this is more me overlooking this for a long while, 'cos its so simple....have all your bills/rent/mortgages come out on your first day of payday...

then you know whatever's left is yours to play with...or, what i also did at one point, have all your money transfered from one account to another, leaving you with just "magic-money" to spend each month...

When I first started using Amazon to get books I spent almost two grand in 6 months. I still find it difficult not to buy books and have to limit myself to 2 a month. Obviously magic poses a similar problem as well as books you've got all those gimmicks and gaffs. When I go to magic shops I have to take cash with me or my credit card would melt. I don't think there's a cure just painful amounts of will power

Mate, if you think 3rd Degree Burn was a poor buy, you are never going to be satisfied! :P

Someone else on here came up with the "£1 per usage" rule, which I think is quite good... if you use it successfully at least as many times as pounds you paid, it's a fair deal. Hence, someone on another thread said they use their stealth assassin loads - which they should do, because that's not a cheap item! Likewise, 3rd Degree Burn cost me £30 but it's solidly made and will easily make 30+ uses. For some people, a £3 TT will be their best buy as they'll use it way more than 3 times, but we wait with baited breath to see if that Black Widow really gets used 140 times before the novelty wears off...!

I've just splashed out on a full set of Tarbell - the last money I'll ever need to spend on magic. But then I always think that - until the next book comes along! I hardly ever buy equipment, but when I do I take Henry Hay's advice - can it be used for more than one trick?

In the beginning I was all gimmicks. I completely disregarded the "books" tab of the local magic site. Then i realized that i could get loads more knowledge from books at a fraction of the price. Also, books will not usually be left at the bottom of your "box of tricks" unused. I've had my "modern coin magic" for ages yet i still use it as a reference to find certain slights.

Although, this still doesn't stop me from drooling over the new killer trick at NUMS.
