Introducing myself

Postby altacartomagia » Jan 12th, '04, 21:14

Hi, everyone.
Im from Argentina.
I love card magic. Really. Im in love with the close up technical card magic art.
I founded an egroup called "AltaCartomagia" (wich can be translated as HighCardmagic). This egroup is the first one on the subject of card magic in Latin America (it started in 1999, aprox.). We are one of the greatest communities of card magic in the spanish language.

Also, I have published several articles on card magic theory, techniques, and tricks, both on paper and on the net.
In the net, you can check out www.geocities.com/altacartomagia/contenido.html
where I wrote about basic and intermediate sleight of hand, and a few tricks. Of course, it is in spanish.
Also, you can read a few essays on theory of magic on my personal page, www.geocities.com/danieldeurquiza (yes, I know, Im cheap, all hosted in freeserver).
Besides, I have published at the site of EMA (Entidad Magica Argentina, Argentinian Magical Entity), www.magika21.com.ar
You can also read La Bitacora (The Binnacle) en www.cometamagico.com.ar, an independent e-magazine.

On paper, I have published two articles on magical theory at "Las Tertulias Magicas Canarias", a magazine from the Circle of Magicians of the Canarian Islands (Spain).
Also, I have published a card trick on EMAGIC, the magazine from EMA.
There are other publications, but I dont want to bother you with the subject any more.

Im a half time performer. On the real world, Im a lawyer.
I have perform mainly at restaurants and weddings, doing close up magic. I also perform, when hired, at partys and reunions, doing an act I have with only card magic.
Ive performed on Theater twice, doing of course card magic.

My referents are Erdnase, Vernon, Rene Lavand, Juan Tamariz, Elmsley and Michael Close.
Im 27, married, tall and fat, but incredibly handsome. No kids (still).

As I said before, I love card magic, to study it, to write about it, to perform it, and to help others to learn it and love it as I do.

So, at your service, any time, any subject, just send my an email. Or ask the question at the forum. If I have something I think could be of use, I will share it.

KR :wink:

It's a pleasure and an honour to have you on our boards Daniel. I look forward to reading some of your posts.

Do you have any plans for translating any of your articles into English, as I (and I am sure our other English speaking members) would love to read them.

hi man.
this is optional but we all use it to make our lives easier.
enjoy your stay on the board nice to have a card purist online. :lol:

Age and Status in your Profile
To help other members form a more visual picture, it would be nice to include your age and 'magic status' as a small signoff in your profile.

We're standardising this to an additional bit of info in the Location panel in your profile... and the format is

(??A : ??S) where as the ??A = your age, and the ??S = your status, chosen from the list below...

EN = Eager Newbie
AH = Amateur Hobbyist
SH = Skilled Hobbyist
WP = Working Professional
CP = Career Professional

So, for example - your Location could be

"Kent, UK, (30:WP)", meaning you're a 30 year old working pro...

This is NOT obligatory, but may help during conversation!

Visting Professional Magicians - it would be much appreciated if you could please make yourselves known to one of the Moderators!

Hi.
Ive done the WP 27 thing. Hope Ive got it right.
Yes, I have the idea of translating to english a few tricks of my own design.
Actually, nowadays Im working on Impro with card magic (Michael Close called it jazzin' at Workers Nº 5). The idea is to have several "paths" or guidelines to develope a routine, with a two or three openers, a few "middles" and another two or three climaxes, interwoven in a way that it is a matter of audience, light, magicians mood, etc the choosing of doing this or that effect. The idea is to get superb reactions always.
The princple or criteria underlying this attemp is that magic, as theater, as cinema, as literature, is a narrative art. So, if you can narrate your effects properly (Im not talking about telling a silly tale, Im adressing mayor topics of structure, blocking, misdirection, timing, presentation and technique), and you can "set" them where they should be, the performer ends with a broader scope and freedom.
Say, you produce the aces as a starter. Then, you may go for Dr. Jacob Daley's Last Trick, or maybe for 1002nd aces from Elmsley. Perhaps thats it with the aces. But perhaps you sense that if you do something more with the aces, the audience will be more delighted. So, you go with a "finish" with the aces, maybe Travellers. from Vernon, or Jumping Gemini, from Ortiz. There, if you wish, you gather your applause, and leave. Or maybe not. You can start with a complete different set of effects, maybe giving the deck to be shuffled, and beggin with a series of impromptu effects. Or maybe simple pretend to leave, then not, you swicht the deck, and go for memorized deck magic.

Of course, as you see, this is very ample. Right now, Im only outlying a few sample routines, and explaining the ideas behind such schemes.
It is far more deep, and ample, and full of shades of gray and color (as everything is, actually. Saint Thomas Aquinas used to say that the essence of a fly is endless. Imagine the essence of the subtle art of Magic :shock: ).
So, maybe, I could restrict myself and only submitting to you people a triumph effect Ive devoloped to be inserted in this paths Ive mencioned before.
Only, of course, if you wish so :wink: .
