i love coin magic and am always trying them out, however i wondered what i can do with a 10p shell for example,

if i just buy it by itself, is there any magic i could do with it ? or is there more to it than that ?

There's a 'chicken before egg' undertone to this...

As you explore the world of coin magic, you will find tricks which require shells... it's not really the other way round.

Basically, I'd advise that you don't purchase one unless you've already read/learned what they're used for.

As I'm sure others will agree. If you're getting into coin magic... Buy Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. If you're completely new to the concept, I'm not sure it's such a good idea - but I assume you do have some pre-knowledge.

Published some 50 years ago, it now struggles to retain it's original title, although not a lot has changed - except for the clothing that the book assumes.

Jean Bobo describes sleights and routines comprehensively, and there is also section on the use of gimmicked coins (shells, coin boxes, folding coins).

You may find this useful.

If you slightly alter the shell, it also becomes good for use with a raven, if you have one. If you do, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you don't, you'll be wondering what the hell that means.

You would have to invest a lot of time to be able to use this 'gimmick' properly. I think you'd be better of spending that time learning some basics with ungimmicked coins, basic vanishes and the like.

The 'pay off' would be more immediate and longer lasting. You could be performing real magic with the coins from any spec's pockets for the rest of your life.

ID is teasing you - but his sig often carries good advice on sleights vs gimmicks.

As everyone else has said you'll really need to have a working knowledge of coin sleights to get the most from a shell. I have one on me all the time but rarely use it, simply because I don't regularly perform any effects that require one. When needed though it's an excellent utility.

Pm me if you're interested in some ideas that can't be said in public, for example coins through glass or coins across.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

what do you use a coin shell for?.... hatching baby coins of course ;)

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

I use a shimmied 1p shell with the Bat to turn a penny into a 5p.
They have many uses, lots of magic books, including the Tarbell series and Mark Wilson's book have effects that require shells.

It's a 10p one Disco, made in Argentina by a company called Tango I think. It's ok, got it from Alakazam for a tenner I remember. I still use it enough to justify having, though I might get some half dollar ones to supercede it so if I do I'll pass it on to you.
