Not only the ghost gaff one, but the red/tiger gaffed also. All (well almost) those routines can be done with any of these decks.

The DVD shows only the gaffed Ghost deck. That's why I found it a bit disapointing when they taught a trick, I can't do with my gaffed red deck, I bought with the DVD. They say you can do 80 or 90% of the tricks with the other decks.

There were a few points that interested me in what I''ve read here, nd on other forums about Army of 52 so I dipped in and bought it.

I have to say that it's the best £15 or so that I've wasted in a long time

Despite the plugs for Shapeshifter of the ultra-smoke which seems to be used to end every one of the routines shown, there's only about a dozen or so cards from the gimmicked deck that seem to have been used. I can just see Ellusionist releasing volume 2 showing more tricks with a different dozen cards.

Judging from the reactions of the audiences none of the tricks seemed to get a great reaction on it's own and the it was actually the Shapeshifter move that seemed to get the best reactions.

I'm embarrassed to have bought this

I bought this a while back in August. Mine came in 4 days suprisingly. I also got the download free as my copy was bad and they sent a replacement.

All I can say about this is I leanred nothing I could not already do, and im relatively new. I didnt know the paintbrush change before the dvd came but with the gaffed 4 ond 5 of clubs i figured it out myself..

Justin created very little patter lines whatsoever in any of his performances, that is to say, no story behind anything..

I have tried the gaff deck in afew ways.. just saying watch and performing an effect gets such a casual reaction, impressive but no 'OH MY GOD'

However, delivering lines like ' sometimes at USPCC, the printers go funny when magic season is at its peak and the cards get printed wrong.. but watch , if i rub here in a certain way, you might see what i mean... see, the ink on this 2 of spades has actually been infused from another card in the deck in the last few minutes.. look.. but if i rub here, the ink should still be a little wet and notice.. your card the 8 of clubs, is coming through from behind the ink.. isnt that weird? That was your card right?' gets people thinking, confused, lost, shocked, the kind of reaction you want when using gaffs

I think your patter has to be somewhat more creative.. people havent seen these cards so they will be shocked, but they will also at first reactions, haveto assume that the card is a 'trick card'.. good patter can create enough misdirection so as they think about what you say after the trick, giving you time to ditch the gaff and move on.

I have newfound respect and admiration for Justin Miller. On this DVD he shows his true performance skills: he has excellent presentation skills, great humour, creative improvisation and good patter. There was something at the end of Army of 52 that disturbed me though... I know this is a kind of stupid question...

Right at the end of this DVD a teenager asks "So Justin, what made you start doing card tricks?" Justin simply replies "Prison."

For all you who have Army of 52 please review the DVD. I doubt Ellusionist would hire someone with a criminal record (I don't know maybe they would), but Justin said it with a kind of wierd smile, no one laughed, and the DVD ends like that. Is it supposed to be humour? why didn't they edit that part out? and even if its true or not would he use a reply like that on camera?

Is it standard practice to check police & prison records when hiring magicians nowadays?

I think it's considered that if you've served a prison sentence you've paid your dues to the society you wronged and the slate's clean.

Anyway Ellusionist were probably jumping at the chance to employ someone who'd done a bit of porridge, makes them look well Urban 'n Gritty.

Overall I was quite unimpressed with the DVD, though that was likely mostly due to the fact that I finally realised that a gaff deck just really doesn't fit my style.

One trick you shouldn't overlook is Pip Matrix. I did this to two 19 yo girls and had them screaming like seven year olds for the whole duration of the trick, right from when the first pip jumps over. To the right spectator this trick is gold.

Pretty much! That's why a lot of performers are police checked nowadays.

Yup. I know most establishments (e.g. restaurants) tend to do it, and it's pretty much essential if you're working as a children's performer.
