American Shootings

Deadly shooting at US university
Emergency services at scene
The campus has now been closed and students evacuated
At least 22 people have been killed and 21 more injured after a gunman went on the rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech university in Virginia, US.

Police say there were two separate shooting incidents - one at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building.

The incidents were about two hours apart. Police say they believe there was one gunman and that he is dead.

The state university in the town of Blacksburg is home to 26,000 students.

"We have a ballpark figure on fatalities. It's at least 20 fatalities," Virginia Tech police chief Wendell Flinchum said.

Just saw this on the news and am shocked. What drives a person to do something such as this? And why?
*Sigh*

Very sad

an all-too-frequent occurence, I'm afraid. When something like this happened in Columbine High School many years ago (was it 10?) it was something so freakish and unheard of. Now things like this are almost commonplace - we had a similar (albeit not so tragic) incident last year in Montreal at Dawson College, where a gunman opened fire in a cafeteria/hang-out place and luckily there was only one casualty other than the gunman.

Why is this happening everywhere????

Columbine was in 1999.

These incidents really are terrible... teenage years can be a volatile time and if you put readily-available handguns into the mix, well, ticking timebomb really.

Yeah, I just heard about the college shooting, as well. The college is Virginia Tech and it is now the biggest on campus shooting in U.S. History. Sometimes it makes me sad to think about how we keep track of things like that. :(

I actually heard an interview on Radio 4 this morning with a talk radio presenter from the US. He was asked if this latest tragedy didn't make gun control more important and he argued the opposite. His view was that if more people carried guns around there would be more protection and less of this sort of thing would happen.

That seems a very warped logic to me and just trying to excuse the inexcusable.

More guns means more nutcases like that can kill. It's all wrong.

Anyone notice that all of the shootings, or at least the ones that are covered by international news channels, are in America? I think that means America sucks. I'll be the first to say it. Cause I'm edgy.

:D

Thanks,

I was on the BBC this morning arguing the other case...our second ammendment (right to bear arms) plus capitalism have created a remarkable result: 200 million guns, one for every adult!

The US has about 25,000 gun murders a year....I never understand the argument of more guns...after Columbine, Charlton Heston, President of the National Rifle Association said that we should ban trenchcoats, so the goths could not hide guns in them :?

I once saw an interview with a Sheriff in some back water town in Texas I think it was and the law there every one over 21 one had to carry a gun on them self. When asked about Murders etc he said
I think there one one a couple of years back we dont get much trouble Some times you get the odd drunk on a saturday night but thats it.

Thats just logical to the dumb. You have to carry guns over 21, or you could just ban guns totally and have no odd drunks on saturday nights. I don't understand some poeple

Being the right wing chap I am I see guns good for the ecomany. On the other hand if some one gets shots you can only get funeral money out of them catch 22. Actually I think that in the UK you should have the right to have arms. And dont start the redundent argument if all the law abiding people carry guns every one else will. Well they do already and knives I know of two stabbings round here that happend yesterday. Of course not every one can carry a gun like the leftys or the common you be just asking for trouble. If you are going get all upity about guns then you should about knive, stun guns, pepper spray and very big sticks.

i think all weapons-weapons of mass destruction-guns-knives....everthing should just be abolished! S**T like weapons causes so much trouble!

the fact (im not speaking about the american community) that you can buy a gun ove the counter in america doesn't help. but again, it's probably worse in the east etc.

theres no need for it! government don't know S**T!
