Mobile Magic....

Postby Mark Waddington » Apr 26th, '07, 18:46

Hi guys

Im looking for mobile phone magic, that can be done on stage. The thing that springs to mind is the Derren Brown Effect on Trick of the Mind. Borrows 3 mobiles, put in a shoebox, and the numbers written down. He pedicts whos is whos by the ringtone.

Any ideas please, think it would suit well with my stage act.

Doc Hilford's Cellular Mitosis? I don't own it myself, but I hear it's pretty good.

"This is the trick that's so strong, Docc Hilford has used it to close his 30 minute mentalism show.
The features claimed here and by the performer are absolutely true!
Here is what the audiences sees:
A spectator is asked to think of any thought. It can be a name, a place, a date, a number, a color, any thought at all. A phone number is randomly selected from any phonebook. There is no force of the name or number from the book! The person is called and asked to guess what the spectator is thinking. The person on the phone names the thought! The spectator speaks to the randomly selected person and he tells the spectator exactly what she's thinking!
This is an incredible effect. Check the important features listed below.
Also included are two bonus effects:
Nudie Call: An original effect using a spectator's cell phone and a mini nudie deck. It's all done in perfectly good taste and has some fun built-in comedy.
Call Me Up Sometime: Ted Annemann's phone test. The pages of annotations by Docc Hilford analyze the psychology of mentalism as seen through a different window.
If you could do only one mental effect for press or audience, Cellular Mitosis would have to be it!
Don't be left behind!
Key Features:
* Any thought can be projected
* Anyone can be phoned
* Any phone book can be used to choose a person
* The spectator always has a free choice in thought and person phoned
* The person phoned can be completely unknown to you or anyone else in the audience
* No code is used
* No stage whispers to spectator or person phoned
* The spectator is never "in on it"
* The spectator can talk to the person
* Can be performed impromptu, up close or on stage"

More for the mentalist so might not be suitable. I do know that it's quite bold.

I've read that PKs can do cool things to phones (though I've never used one myself, only read about them, so could someone confirm that?)

You could do a pseudo psychometry style routine, perhaps. You pass out 5 velvet bags (do a search on the web, you can find nice, inexpensive bags which will look elegant and professiona), to 5 random spectators, asking them to drop their cell phone into them and pull the strings tight to close them.

Have them collected and mixed up out of your sight - as the 5 spectators come up. You then begin by removing a phone from a bag, then proceed to identify the owner in any method you prefer (cold reading style, phone details fitting the type of person, etc.). One-by-one you return the phones back to the spectators, until only one remains.

For the final spectator, you hold just the bag up by the drawstrings, attempting to use characteristics about the SPECTATOR to describe the phone. You now begin to describe what the phone looks like. You could even draw it if you wanted. You then take it out and return it to the spectator.

Something like that, perhaps?

Haim Goldenberg has an absolutely brilliant cell phone effect on his Between 2 Minds DVD. Essentially the performer shows a spectator his video club membership card, saying he has a movie on hold to pick up after the show. ANYONE in the audience is asked to name ANY movie they have seen. No stooge, no pre-show, no force - it is truly any movie they want.

The performer takes out his cell phone and hands it to the spectator to dial the number on the video card. It's put on speaker phone, and when asked, the movie that the store is holding is the exact movie the spectator just named.

If you need any help with the first one, pm me. I'll help you out. For the second effect, you'd need to purchase Between 2 Minds. Pricey ($100), but has some great material on it. Come to think of it, I should do a review on it, sometime.

Hope those ideas help.

The only place I know of is MoreMagicTricks.co.uk - whilst not strictly in the UK I have ordered from them before and the service has been excellent.

well on max magic there was a routine with watches. there was a prediction, 5 bags, 5 tags numbered 1-5 and four crappy watches. oh, and a hammer. the dude was asked to place his watch in one bag and the other watches in a bag each and jumble them up (while max had his back turned). then max went through smashing the bags and there was one left, it was at position number two, and it was the dudes watch. the prediciton wa correct.

perhaps you could do this but with phones? i don't know the name of the effect though sorry :?

There is a good mobile phone mentalist routine in David Acer's Random Acts of Magic book.
You have a spec on stage then get someone in the audience to write down a six digit number and ask another to do the same. You then get a third person to add them up and a fourth to ring the total number.
The spec on stage's mobile then rings!
