Rubber Cement

Postby ultimatecreate » May 6th, '07, 12:26

Does this have another name in the UK??????? I swear I've been into all kinds of stationery shops looking for this and none stock it. When the idiots behind the counter look ask me why I want it and I try to explain they always look at me like a weirdo.

Ive tried a couple of bike packs for mending tyres but they don't really cut the mustard.

Ive heard Ross is really good for rubber cement but I can't find any UK stockists.

Heeeelp!!

The nearest thing I could find, if it's for gluing purposes, is Copydex, which I found in Staples.

You can find it in any bicycle puncture repair kit.

Copydex is a very useful tool, but it does make an awful fishy smell as it cures.

Yes, it's quite toxic!
If you get some of it on your trousers, it can look quite dodgy!

I can't find anything about toxicity on the tube, but it does say: "Copydex bonds are resistant to normal washing machine cycles, but are not resistant to dry cleaning". I never knew that, which makes it even more interesting...

I believe NUMS has rubber cement for less than a 5'er.

Copydex gives off amonia as it cures, I believe. It's a latex solution.

Rubber cement is 'jellified' rubber. Using thinners. Copydex, before curing, is a water-based solution. Rubber cement is thinners based.

Also, inner tube cement contains acids and stuff... the cement sold at NUMS is acid free, and skin friendly.

The smell is toxic to my nostrils!

Must invest in some rubber cement soon too...

I haven't had any problems with the rubber cement that comes with the puncture repair kit from Wilkinsons. (79p I think)

Do a skin test first though

Wow... I'm suprised it's so hard to find in the UK.

In the 'States, you can find it pretty much anywhere, but recently my state has stopped selling it to people under 21 years old... Too many kids trying to get high off of it, I guess. Good thing I turn 21 next week

I'm stocked up on the stuff anyway... two bottles (not for huffing, either).

The reason it's hard to find in the UK is because people don't know what it's name is over here. It's available in almost any DIY store, hardware store or office supplies store.

We just call it something different.
