Magnet specifications

Postby In kaleidoscopes » May 11th, '07, 19:11

Hi guys,

I am currently doing some trial and error effects with cards and magnets. I am not looking for ideas or discussion of effects, but seek some help on the technicalities of good earth magnets. I am not sure about any particular vendors that sell them at decent rates, or if there are any particular online magic shops that sell. I am also interested in buying them in wholesale.

As I said, please no references to any effects on the market as I don’t want to get into exposure. But the criteria I am looking for is as follows:

Disc sized, as flat as they come. Small would be good, but 1.5” diameter maximum.

Able to magnetize together from at least 6” away. And able to magnetize through cards, thicker cardboard, and if possible glass.

If anyone can lend me a hand with these Id be very thankful!

Thanks in advance,

Kirk

Disc magnets smaller than 1.5" diameter attracting at 6" apart may be a little too much to ask.

Plus i'd steer clear of most magic dealers as they tend to charge way too much for neodym magnets.

1.5" at 6 inches is no problem.

I have 1" discs here, which are 1/4 inch thick, and I can literally move a washer on a table top from 6 inches below.

I've got about 100 different sizes of magnets, and definately you need to be looking at 1" x 1/4 for the kind of magnetism you're after. N45 strength, if possible.

Siege, where'd you get those magnets? Do you have to find a specific kind?

Well, back in the days when I was one of the first and only magic dealers selling a range of Neo magnets, before others jumped the bandwagon, I sourced them directly from a manufacturer in the USA.

This proved a costly investment, as I was under a minimum order quantity contract.

However... all of a sudden, there are neo magnets everywhere, and the marketplace is a whole lot more competitive.

Currently, I would recommend www.supermagnete.de

Their range is good, magnets are excellent, and prices are good. But watch shipping and duty costs... magnets are very heavy, and this is the main reason why getting GOOD ones is hard.

There are many new shops opening, but their inferior Asian magnets have poor strength, poor coatings, and quite frankly, the old adage 'buy cheap, buy twice' applies.

I've been down that route myself.

Actually you're right. I just tried with a couple of disc magnets just over half an inch in diameter and the one on the table starts to move at 12"!!!

I forget how strong these babies are. Last month I struggled to seperate 2 big buggers and trapped part of my t-shirt. It cut a hole in my new T-shirt

Just remember though, big neodyms can be DANGEROUS. Without warning they will jump together FAST and damage whatever is between them, including fingers! Plus they're an absolute b*stard to seperate
