Whydo many magicians never say 'Thank You'? Mandrake, Lord Freddie, Laurence &Tenyo are amongst several exceptions.
This seems to apply mainly to the UK and parts of the USA.
I've sent a number of items to the USA and some don't even click on the received grid. In the UK , recently I sent details of a hard to find vent routine and an original one I'd written.. nothing.
Only yesterday, again on the Forum, I sent details of a longed for item. ' They had it and I've now ordered it''''full stop.
Yet magicians in France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Finland, Hawaii and Japan ALWAYS offer that simple 'Thank You'.
Perhaps I grew up in a Society and Age where 'Manners Maketh Man'

Strangely enough the lack of manners and selfish attitudes of some people were the subect of a few PMs this week. We could only conclude lack of proper parental guidance and no resisitance to bad peer pressure are probably amongst the main reasons,

I think that the forum is a much less personal thing and people tend to come across ruder and more abrupt than they would if you were talking to their face.

Sadly, Allen, I suspect this may be less about Magician's in general, and more about users of Internet forums like this one.

There frequently seems to be a general view that information should be freely available, without the need to acknowledge the contributor(s).

This is seen even more increasingly in forum posters who ask a question, wait a day (or, in many cases, an hour or two), and then go on a serious rant if they've not received any answers

Or, perhaps Mandrake's right, and this really is just a sign-o-the-times with younger folk, these days...

On the flip-side ('cause I'm really a glass-half-full kinda' guy!), I'd just like to recognise all the guys here, who go out of their way to offer thoughts, routines and information without even being asked; it's guys (and guy-ettes) like this that help to make TM the great place it is

manners are almost a forgotten art these days...

and a gentleman's word should be his bond; nowadays there's shysters under nearly every rock...

I was always taught to say my pleases and thankyous, if I didn't I'd get a clip around the ear

I think some kids out there now are just so used to getting what they want, it just becomes the norm, and if they don't get it, it's tantrum time.

I was in woolworths the other day and some little brat was screaming, I want this playstation game and I want that game. No pleases but his mum just picked them up and bought them for him.

Manners are literally something which seems absent these days.

My 17 year old nephew had to be told by his mother to thank me for his birthday present last week.

I think that the reason is that people tend to be rather lazy these days. Take, for instance 'txt' speak. It's ridiculous for people to use it on forums or in real life, as the abbreviated nonsense which gets spewed out is what we now refer to at work as 'Chav Shorthand'.

We even had an instance of it in a job application letter recently.

Please, thank you and sorry are 'additional' vocabulary to many these days. They are words which aren't necessary in a conversation, so it seems. And because it's easier to skip them, they get skipped.

I had an enquiry at the magic shop yesterday, for instance, asking
"Is there a discount at your shop for forum users"

That was literally it.

My reply was:

"Sir/Madam
The discount scheme has been axed and our prices are now lower all-round. The discount applied to long-standing TalkMagic.co.uk members only.
Regards,
etc."

To which I got:

"Then you just lost a customer".

• No introduction
• No signoff
• No please, thank you etc.

Why should we even bother with these people? It actually grates me.

And not ONCE has anyone ever thanked the Mods on this forum for doing such an excellent job of keeping the rubbish away from here. The old, new and even ungrateful grunts who use this place as a sounding board are lacking in manners (I am speaking broadly, no offence to the good-guys), so I will do it on behalf of everyone else...

I thought Abraxus started a thread not long ago thanking everyone for keeping the forum running smoothly?

But yes I personally appreciate everything the mods do (voluntarily) and they seem to get a lot of flack when things go wrong or people have a difference of opinion.

I am now in a state of alarm. I can't remember if I thanked Allen for sending me my original LETTER routine from 30 years ago. I expect I did because I am a British gentleman of the first order.

I typed the whole thing out laboriously and it is now preserved in Word Format. If I ever put my Wit and Wisdom book in hard copy format I shall include the new version that Allen sent me instead of the few paragraphs that are in the book.

I see that in the Little Darlings section of the Magic Cafe they are making an almighty fuss about the LETTER. However they haven't seen the deluxe version that Allen sent me.

I think I thanked him but in case I didn't then THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I'm afraid it's the culture of immediate self-gratification and thinking of only No. 1 that seems to hold the majority these days

I've always tried to thank people for their help, and I certainly notice when people don't.

If there's one thing I cannot stand, it's seeing children demanding things from their parents, or being ungrateful - I was brought up to smile from ear to ear and say a big thankyou to whoever had given you the gift, even if it was horrible and you'd already been given 5 that day!

Unfortunately, I see plenty of children as described by Lady of Mystery... and I suspect they grow up to be the kind of people that send messages like the one Seige has mentioned

I too would like to thank the Mods for the work they do everyday keeping this a largely on track magic forum which genuinely helped my magic on leaps and bounds.

Secondly I would like to thank everyone else on here for making it informative,fun and friendly

Thirldy I'd like to thank me because no one else will and I'm just so plain great I would like to spend a whole day just walking past a full length mirror giving myself the eye.....'well hello there sexy boy'

it's a case of "times change people change".

it's not JUST the poor parent hood etc. it's the world we're brought up in.

i myself am sixteen, and my mum and dad always tell me "manners cost nothing" which they don't and i think i have pretty good manners myself

however, this is a forum. as said above, people may come across more rude and abrupt then in real life, it's just one of those things.

also, it's a case of get what your given. if somebody is rude to me I'm rude to them

as for "txt chat" times change. people may say there is no point in it, it's your opinion. i frequently use "txt chat" when on MSN and i try to avoid it on this forum. however, don't knock it. some years down the line the english language might be over taken be "txt chat" it is possible! wasn't there a guy a while back. yes, I'm sure. if he couldn't think of a way to describe something he made a new word. what was his name? oh yeh! Shakespeare!
