It seems to me that a lot of people on the forum are confusing magic with the effects that magicians perform. What a magician will do is a simple act of dexterity or trickery. What a magician causes, however, is the magic that we feel after watching an effect. Magic is that feeling of the unexplained and impossible. What the spectator feels at the end of a magicians performance is magic. You cannot teach magic or learn it, you can only teach or learn the effects that instill it in people. If someone watches an effect performed but is not impressed or moved by the performance, there is no magic. When spectators get that feeling, that "Wow", "Crazy", "Awesome" feeling, that is the magic.
