Hi.

I'm fairly new to magic, but having seen several magic shows at the theatre over the last couple of years I have become hooked.

I saw Derren Brown last year, and he did a trick where he got an audience member to take several handfuls of buttons and place them on a tray. He then looked at them for no more than a couple of seconds and could accurately give the amount. On the TV he did something similar with smarties (the yummier option).

I was just wondering if anyone knew the name of the trick or of any tricks with a similar effect?

This may help. I don't know if it is the name of the actual effect and I think that it is taught in one of his books, but don't hold me to that.
