Toad -

Anyone who can belch a 4ft stack of flames from their mouth is certainly skilled in some way - even if it's only being the only bloke on your block who can eat a Meat Phal Tandoori-style.

We're all skilled and talented in our own way. If this is the way we represent ourselves, and we are getting some form of positive response - then surely that's the sort of self-glorification we all look for from an early age - and something which is built into us as human beings - to constantly better ourselves.

Goldfish,

There's no need to apologise at all. Your impressions are your impressions, and it was actually quite refreshing that you openly shared them with us in this way.

I don't think anyone was offended by this, just maybe a little shocked that TalkMagic could give that impression.

I'd be very interested to see if this changes in anyway after you have been here awhile, meanwhile lets all get back to talking about that which we love.

Magic.

Sure it's nice to feel that you know something that others don't, but would say that on the whole members of this forumare here just to help. When one of us knows something that would be of benefit to another member we tend to tell them, provided of course that they seem to be suitable to be told. Perhaps this is where the sense of selfgratification is being observed, who are we to decide, based on a few posts on the forum who is a magician and who is just blagging it? That's why the MO section is there, we just have to avoid revealing secrets to people who don't have access just to be on the safe side.

My advice would be to relax a little - get to know us a bit better

Guys please. Let's not haul him over the coals for this. It wasn't meant as an insult or even as a criticiism. It was merely an honest observation.

i could have a word to them about there attitude.

No one needs to be "Talked To" about their attitude!

If we come across as "Self Glorified" that thats how we come acroos. It doesn't mean we are self glorified, its just a first impression.

I think its US that needs to relax...

ok - I can live with that. I think I do need to relax a bit
I must say, though, that I'm learning a lot from you guys. Pardon the flattery - but you're good people. I really like the attitude with which the forum is run.
Sorry for 'hauling you over the coals' Goldfish - wasn't intended that way :)

And that's what makes this forum so good, people being able to admit that they sounded over harsh after re-reading their posts!

I don't know about self gratification, but I'm quite prepared to back up all claims that this is the best magic forum on the web!

Nicely said, Nick.

Can we stop this now and talk about magic for a while, please? I think it's unfair (although I'm guilty as charged) to have put GoldFish through the mill.

And as we're all sitting eating humble pie, I'd like to apologise too. I think that this place has become very personal to us - and although it may seem 'territorial' and 'unapproachable' in areas, it really is a friendly place. In fact, we pride ourselves in it.

And perhaps that's why so many of us were so quick to jump down your throat to defend it.

hey goldfish.
You have not offended anyone and you should not be apologising for starting an interesting thread. This goes deeper than we have taken it and i think we should explore it.
To me there are two different types of magician, or maybe more. I have walked into magic shops on numerous occasions and waited while some guy has come in and done trick after trick to me, with no discussion, and then just left, with a certain amount of arrogance. This is, what i believe, an example of magician number one. magician number one has spent his life trying to impress people. Thats it. He has found that magic is a way to do this and has chosen to work bloody hard at achieving it.
I also believe that there is nothing really wrong with this.
Then there are those that just seem to do magic because of a natural passion for the art. and also a natural passion for performing. There is a difference and I see that difference here on this website.
This site is full of people with a passion. Thats why they spend their time writing in rather than doing s*** loads of other stuff they could be doing.
I started my magic life as magicain number 1 and, after very little time became magician number 2 and found myself a bit lost. We have a unique interest unlike football etc that we cannot share with our friends at school/college/work. I'm lucky cos i perform every day so i meet other performers and bitch about the strange mixed up life we lead. Most magicians dont have this so to write in and "self glorify" is an entitlement I think we all deserve.

tuffer.

as children's entertainer, I'm definately strandedin camp no 2.
this forum is my only outlet for my talent as my work shedule meens i work usosiable hours.

its rare to find a working kids entertainer in camp 1 but i certainly have met my fair share, in the trade so to speek we often refere to them as head's, there the pretty one at the front of stage doing all the hand gesturing and manly poses while the box jumpers (the assistants) do all the hard work.
ok i know this is an oversimplification and most of the front men are seasoned performers in there own rights, I'm just saying that the actual backbone of performers are the local magician's working the pubs and club / private circuit and camp 1 people don't last very long in this field.

whats my point, well i dont realy know, just seemed apropiate to say at this point that its the grass roots entertainers that shape your view about magic as you grow up, be it that scary clown who ate your cake then stuck spikes through your rabbit, or people like me who try oand create a memorable picture that you can carry with you and becomes part of your character and gives you a passion for magic.
i guess what I'm trying to get across is that we childrens entertainers are trying to sell you a dream, a passion for life.

i bet you remember the first trick that inspired you to follow the path into magic and I'm sure pound to a penny it wasnt a big trick on some spectacular show done by a pretty boy who can fly (no offense to flying pretty boys), i bet it was a regular guy in a strange costume.
