Monty Python...some good, some not so good but the less good stuff is easily overlooked. Life of Brian has just been voted the best all time film in the UK - by readers of the Radio Times. A poll of 2500 in total!
Life of Brian is a masterpiece from start to finish. It's beautifully paced, it has an exciting plot, just enough philosophy and some great gags.
Much of the material in the series either wasn't funny then or hasn't stood the test of time. There, I said it and it's stopped raining. But when they were funny, they were very funny indeed! I personally think they learned to write comedy properly when they got into film.
I always liked Python but thought that it went from one extreme to the other. Sometimes there was brillaince and sometimes it was humourless. Their TV episodes (flying circus) are however considered classics and are re-run over and over on cable. When there's little else on they are always worth another viewing
As for their films, for me, these are at the brilliance end. Life of Brian is still funny today, even after umpteenth viewings and the Meaning of Life is also one of my favourites.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
Shame about Rushton. Great comedian.

We are studying Life of Brian in religious studies. I ended up reciting pretty much the whole script.
I love Richard Pryor. His stuff is deep though. He tells his life story, and its all true. Heart attacks, prison, mother dying. The list goes on, and he makes it all funny.
