Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Has anyone here actually tried the Prepetual Coin Myth from Book One?

The Conversations From The Edge interviews at the end of each Art of Astonishment book actually have some interesting theories in them. The Collapsing Marble Myth may actually have something workable within. And how about this, my favourite of them all:

It involved two spectators: One a stooge.

Both sould sit on stage and be covered head to toe with a very large sheet. While the spectator's vision is impaired momentarily, the stooge will quietly leave the stage. Then, the magician whisks away both sheets (one left on chair by stooge) and acts like both people have vanished. The spectator will think she and the stooge are invisible! They can then reappear anyway you want.

This was published as a gag in the Art Of Astonishment books, but I actually think there is potential for a working effect here. Would any of you try this? Do you see potential? By some chance, have you tried this?

This all strikes up another interesting question: Can this be executed?

What do you all think? Your thoughts?

No. You cannot convince someone that they have become invisible. Not only that, but you have to get the whole audience to pretend like the person is invisible. Not to mention why did the sheet on the 'invisible' person fall to the stool, while the sheet on the 'non invisible invisible person' remain on their head.

I can get a few spins out of it, but then the middle coin either shoots out or snaps flat. That being said I am using half dollars as I only own a single US dollar coin, using the larger coins might make it a little better!

Who here has tried PH Breakthrough or Bleached Blackjack? When I saw the demos a while ago I was blown away, then blown ever farther when I read that neither effect required a gimmick.

Have you ever tried them? Your thoughts?

There's far more impressive gimmickless magic out there Mike... you'll find it one day when you concentrate on magic as a pusuit rather than obsession.

Yes, thank you, I understand that. But PH Breakthrough and Bleached Blackjack are pretty darn strong too. Also, probably one of the strongest and best effects in the Art of Astonishment Books is Eric Mead's 10th Card Mystery. Has anyone used it yet? I just studied to routine and practiced it and I cannot wait to try it out.

It seems your 'mastering' an aweful lot of effects very quickly recently and shooting off to perform them.

Mike how long do you spend working on one effect before performing it? I mean reallyu working on it?

I work on all of the effects I learn for about 2 weeks before taking them public, and I usually work on them pretty frequently. I also constantly try the works in progress on family members.

I use Harris' Flap Jacks effect all the time, it gets really great reactions. Give it a try!

Crikey! I spend months of self doubt honing anything I show to anyone, trying to see it from other viewpoints, changing it, sometimes even abandoning it altogether. I've still not performed "Out of Sight (Redux)" for anyone because I don't think I've found my own personal sweet spot with it yet.

Me too.. Im performing now what I learned in May!! gimmicks and self workers are one thing and even they need around 3 weeks practice. Anything requiring sleights and work takes MUCH longer.

I got Covert Magic in the last couple of days. Only watched bit of it but I can't see me performing any of it till at Least early october !!

I do as well, but with many effects for me it is just not necessary considering how frequently I work on them. Presentation-wise, etc etc.

So, does anyone perform Eric Mead's 10 card effect?

What's the point of this thread? It's just naming tricks from the Art of Astonishment...

Yes, I do leaf, but I don't see why you would need to know...

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking
