Lets make Magic

Postby BanaZombie » Jul 29th, '07, 09:51

I'm not sure of the specifics yet but I think I'm setting out a challenge or competition type scenario here. Whats I would like to do, this is all with respect and true intention I am a man of my word and will respectfully bow out on this if the moderators do not approve.

I like discussions of intellect and creativity I like puzzles and riddles but the game is different for now atleast but it does involve intellect.

My personal contest challenge: What I want to see is scripts of original patter, non copyrighted materials all original for any close up effect you choose. This could be a simple coin or card routine or just one really well planned effect. The Rules are this tell me the effect and I will educate and familirize myself with it. Then write to your hearts content an original "your own material" script of your patter.

Just PM with your scripts and I will make my best judgement for originalty and overall scripting abilities. All rights will be remain to be yours to your script. You will never see it reproduced or displayed or otherwise used by anyone but yourself, So this insures the Intellectual property of each magician will not be violated in any way. Why am I doing this because learning from others and watching there creative processes stimulates my own creativity, which is what any artisitic open forum should do. "please no more arguments about the merits of artistry".

I will give this contest two days and decide on the third and final day who the winner is. Then I will select an effect purchasing it with my own money and mail it to you. The item won't be expensive and it also will not be cheap we will discuss the details when I have decided my winner.
So please paricipate, and with the moderators green light on this, make some magic happen. This is 100% legitimate and I will even give a moderator my cellular phone numebr if the wish to contact me about this.

Thanks

Matt

Please qualify:

1. Your intentions
2. Your motive
3. Your use of TalkMagic as a harvesting ground

It's a little unclear in your post, that's all.

Simply enough the intentions were as posted. Its a Challenge of creativity and I'm a man of my word.

We will try to break it down thsi way then, on this basis. What, who, when, where, how, why.

The What: Is a challenge of creativity and as stated it the original post, when I see the mechanics of others creativity at work I get inspired to create.

The Who: This is open to all Talk Magic Participants who are not guest users, you must be a registered user to qualify.

The When: Now until Wednesday of this week.

Where: The here and now on talk magic.

The How: Is only limited by your imagination, but is limited to se3nding your ideas as personal messages because, I don't want others simply taking someones patter for an effect and rewriting it, so that gives the odds that all will come up with there own ideas. So submissions for this will be limited to personal messages to myself.

Why?: Because I love magic, and I think more original ideas should be able to come from a community frequented by Magicians. I have no real motives short of the "Challenge" that I'm bringing to the table. I would think that Magicians of any caliber might rise to the occasion to meet such a challenge.

This is 100% Legit (323)533-6047 My name is Matt thats my Cell number, normally I wouldn't post something like that on a public forum but you now have the ability to call me and ask me more if you'd like.

Its a verizon Phone so if you have that phone service the call would be in network and free for you to call me.

My next Challenge , even though not and original idea, inspired by the movie The Prestige, and David Blaine's codebreak challenge from his book. The next challenge will be to break a cypher and figure out a hidden message given piece by piece in my posts. Why would I do all this just because, that may not suit you for an answer but all the same I promise you it will be well worth it for you to participate in any of my challenges. Remember Houdini Challenged lots of people, including other Magicians and companies when it came to his escape artist acts. So have a sense of adventure and particpate in the spirit of creativity I promise your efforts will be well rewarded.

Oh by the way just because I used Houdini as an example in no way am I comparing myself to the Maestro.

Still unsure, has the world or people lost that much faith in honest intentions that no one will see fit to have trust. It will be your loss not mine.

Thank You siege as well for calling to verify my phone number and intentions.

The main problem is that you're a relative newcomer and, despite your statement above, you haven’t actually checked with the Mods prior to posting as to whether this is a good idea or not. We’ve had so many previous instances of members being ripped off with apparently innocent requests for routines, magazine articles and so on so you can expect some resistance to this sudden staging of a competition. Have you actually checked the last 4 years of posts to see if this sort of thing has already been done or is currently ongoing?

That sounds rather confrontational and not something which adds any reassurance in this respect. How about you shelve this idea until you’ve been here more than 12 days and have more than 33 posts to your credit?

All I'm asking for is in an exercise in trust, here. I understand and respect your points but I just simply figured if the moderators had objections they would have already contacted me directly. As for things sounding confrontational that isn't my intention. I'm a grown man who is just asking people to put there faith in me. Let my actions define me as a person not your preconcieved notions and fears because some other jerk managed to ruin things like this in the past. Faith and trust are what you should elinquish yourself to. If you feel I'm not qualified to have those things then I'm sorry you have been some how disuaded from those actions because of your past experiences in life. Let go of fear and just live in the moment in the spirit of the thing, is it toomuch to ask, maybe but only if you don't exercise trust. It is a sad day when not only an individual but an entire community step up and say why should I trust you. Simply because I am of honest intentions here, thats al I can offer as an answer. As far as shelving the idea, I'm not doing it simply because I think that people should be able to act in there own best jusdgement as to whether they will participate.

Have faith in people sometimes it helps, unfortunatley thats hard when your in the business of deception I guess. This statement is neither confrontational nor a challeneg to anyone. So execise faith and see what comes of it.

This whole thing reminds me of the moment in the Prestige when the transpoted man secret is revealed but he simply wants more, he thinks theres a bigger answer when in fact he had the answer the whole time, this in turn just showed a lack of faith in himself and his abilities so much so that he was willing to kill replicated vesrions of himself to obtain glory. Sometimes life is an exercise in trust.

This seems a strange thing to do, considering there have been (so I understand, I'm a new user myself) official TalkMagic competitions in the past.

But assuming this is "100% Legit" there are still numerous issues with it. For a start, if I were to write a 10 minute long epic of an ambitious card routine, and someone else were to come up with an original method for producing a wine bottle from a teacup, how would you compare those?

Furthermore, speaking as someone who always scripts his own material, I write loose ideas for patter and improvise around it, depending on the situation and the audience. Plus, I'm a short Londoner with a fairly relaxed style. Chris Angel would look ridiculous doing anything I do, because good original scripting should fit the performer.

Lastly, without meaning to rant, what is the point of sending you details of the effect and a script when we could just film it and stick it on the net? Or just post it in the RA section of this website. Trusting as I try to be, if you stole one of my routines I'd never know, and if you have no intention of stealing it, why do you need to know the intricate workings? Surely the effect itself would be enough.

Sorry banazombie, your platituides of faith, trust and living for the moment ring very hollow, it might work in California but not here, sorry. Until you've established your bonafides as a contributing member of some standing, launching requests for tricks and information like this will not go down well because we've heard it far too many times before - something you would know had you actually checked. And as for expecting the Moderators to contact you, that's very selfish - how about you do the decent thing and ask first?

End of.

PS Please understand that sending multiple (6 or 7 at the last count?) PMs under various titles to clog up my Inbox when I'm not on line really isn't the way to react. It's overkill bordering on spamming and, in view of the ridiculous quantity, I'm not likely to open any of them.
