T.G. Murphy Deck Flip

Postby kitaristi0 » Aug 2nd, '07, 15:04

I've been working on the T.G. Murphy Deck Flip (taught in Trilogy, some Dan and Dave lecture notes and Murphy's book Imagication) for the past few days and I constantly have either the top or bottom card, or sometimes both, fly off the deck mid-spin. I've tried adjusting my pressure and finger placements but I haven't found the solution yet. I'd be happy to hear any tips you might have on the move.

I have the exact same problem! (In fact, I made a topic just like this one at the Dan and Dave forums.) I still haven't figured it out, but I have been practicing it a lot and it seems to work better if you don't use so much pressure with your fingers and kind of flick your wrist to get it around.

Thats taking shorcuts... just get the pressure right and extend your thumb and fingers at the same time

The Deck Flip does not need much pressure. Try less and less pressure each time until you can get a rapid spin with no cards flicking out. I presonally don't really use the other fingers much... I just mainly use my thumb and index finger, and I can still do it right 90% of the time. So I don't know about the other fingers...

I tried reducing the amount of pressure and trying to release all fingers at the same time and it's getting better for sure. I'll give it some more practice and hopefully I can nail it.

You will definitely get it :). Dan Buck said that when he was learning it, he didn't practice it for a while. Then he picked up a deck after a month of not practicing the flip and he just suddenly was able to do the flip.

But I'm sure you can get it :)

Yes man, I had that exact problem. I got it in like 20 minutes though. Just don't use a lot of pressure and make sure that your fingers and thumb let go at the exact same time. Worked for me. Hope it helps.

keep at it

Just keep at it for as long as it takes. Now, I can get it to flip diagonally like 3 times and catch it. It's fun. Also if one card consistently falls off the deck, find out if its the top or bottom and manipulate it into a trick. So they pick a card, you control it to bottom/top (whatever one falls off) then do the deck flip and it looks like their card flew from the deck if you do it fast.

The deck flip can take a lot of work.
It is all down to personal preference and handling, I myself give a little upward contact with the finger used to flip the deck, and it revolves around the thumb outwards, to land in the desired place.

And if you find it easier to do the Deck flip a different way (say, using the middle finger instead of forefinger) go for it, I use my middle finger for the flip and so do a couple of others, you don't always have to go by the book.

Good luck with it.
