Magic Society/Club at University

Postby Jjtee » Aug 24th, '07, 13:33

Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm a current university student at imperial, and after much scouting there doesn't seem to be a club for magic...whereas other universities do. So I was thinking about setting one up...but don't really know what it could/should entail. Any ideas, or info on other societies?

Ha! Don't worry, Imperial is v.geeky. I'm sure I can find members (people, not members...that's a whole different type of group "activity"), and we can all "play" together, give one another a "hand". We are sensible though, we'll use protection...TTs.

The Fresher's Fair is always a good place to attract members, they'll probably give you a free table for a day or two since it's a university society you're setting up. Go and see the union rep. Normally they appoint a special one just for the fresher's fair.

I helped to set up a society at university, and this is how we went about it. It wasn't a magic society though. It was much worse than that.

It was also a disaster, but don't let that put you off.

Instead of starting a club for budding magicians, why don;t you join a club for performing arts, acting etc?

You can keep practicing the magic but will learn new skills from a variety of different people / groups that will no doubt help the performance side of your magic.

Just a thought

I know at least one other person at Imperial who would definately join. I'm myself a student, though at Oxford and not in London and I had been wondering about magic societies at university. However, then I thought about it again and felt that maybe it's not such a good idea. Why?
Just imagine a stall at freshers' fair where you show some routines to naive freshers. Undoubtedly lots will sign up and lots will come to your first few meetings - but what will you do? Show them some first simple secrets (I'm talking about those new members who haven't done magic before) and techniques, recommend books, DVDs etc? I would fear that soon the whole university will be flooded with half-hearted students of magic who show a few card tricks to their friends who will have already seen them done by four others previously. So an open magic society at freshers' fair? I'd say no.

However, that's not to say a magic society at university isn't a bad idea as such, except that it should be run like an independent magic society, not like a standard university society, i.e. no stall at freshers' fair, students who are interested in joining will first have to find out about its existence by themselves and then show perhaps at least a basic knowledge of magic (both technique and exposure ethics and so on) before being allowed to join. The point being that you'll only get people who are genuinely interested and are more likely to be prepared to learn it properly. And I don't think there's any fear that you'll miss out on good members because any magician who's at uni will undoubtedly at some point investigate whether there is a university society.

I agree Neyak it could attract the wrong kind. I suspect it would depend on how you 'set your stall', as it were.

I think it would work as a bona fide society, however. Maybe just a listing in the Union Societies? Anyone wishing to know if there is a magic society would just have to look.

Any ideas how this could be done?
