I know at least one other person at Imperial who would definately join. I'm myself a student, though at Oxford and not in London and I had been wondering about magic societies at university. However, then I thought about it again and felt that maybe it's not such a good idea. Why?
Just imagine a stall at freshers' fair where you show some routines to naive freshers. Undoubtedly lots will sign up and lots will come to your first few meetings - but what will you do? Show them some first simple secrets (I'm talking about those new members who haven't done magic before) and techniques, recommend books, DVDs etc? I would fear that soon the whole university will be flooded with half-hearted students of magic who show a few card tricks to their friends who will have already seen them done by four others previously. So an open magic society at freshers' fair? I'd say no.
However, that's not to say a magic society at university isn't a bad idea as such, except that it should be run like an independent magic society, not like a standard university society, i.e. no stall at freshers' fair, students who are interested in joining will first have to find out about its existence by themselves and then show perhaps at least a basic knowledge of magic (both technique and exposure ethics and so on) before being allowed to join. The point being that you'll only get people who are genuinely interested and are more likely to be prepared to learn it properly. And I don't think there's any fear that you'll miss out on good members because any magician who's at uni will undoubtedly at some point investigate whether there is a university society.
