I hate to see legendary performers work when they are old. They are usually way past their prime. I saw it with Slydini, I saw it with Howard de Courcey, I saw it with Jay Marshall and many others. I bet Scarne was much better when young.
I nearly met him once. I was working in a shoeshop in London and the boss used to visit casinos. He told me that the night before at his regular casino he saw an American magician named John Scarne produce a card from his mouth. I nearly went down to the casino that night to see him but I never did. I wish I had now.
I agree it was a tad boring but John Scarne is still a legendry figure in the history of card magic/gambling.
But I thought cutting the aces was a routine that had magicians baffled for years and people still don't know the method to this day? Hopefully this was a different version performed for the cameras because I prefered not knowing the method.
I suspect the method described in his book was a load of baloney. I do own John Scarne a debt of gratitude though. When I first started magic I was getting nowhere in my studies until I got hold of his book "Scarne's Magic Tricks". I was pleased that the tricks used normal everyday objects and I got my basic magic education from that book. It helped build the foundations for the stuff I learned later.
For once, I agree with Mark Lewis. This was a little boaring. You would think that a master magician would be a little more enthusiastic when producing a card from his wallet. I was much more impressed with the video of him on the Learned Pig website.
