The little guy sitting at home with his webcam putting a trick on youtube from his bedroom is no different from the professional who does it on a TV show - I would suggest the professional is worst.

Hmmmmm.....a couple of professionals worldwide have given secrets away.
I reckon 100's more policemen have been found guilty of say stealing worldwide.

Does that mean that the message the police are giving out is: "It's ok to steal"?

Now I think of it, probably more policemen commited murder than pro magicians revealed secrets on TV.............. Does that mean I can go on a killing spree if I want?

You make an interesting point . Viz the police senario.
However the public take a very dim view of the police or policeman who breaks the law . We expect those in charge if you like, to be whiter then white don't we and we also expect the law to come down bit heavier against those who up hold it.
Its all about what our expectancy level is . Prehaps I and i hope we, don't expect the professional magician to break the one most important rule we have .
You are of course correct it is only a few professionals that do this , the problem is that those programmes are repeated over and over again and the cycle is never broken. A new audience watches these repeated programmes everytime. Perception could well be "oh its all rright then" when in truth it is not .

@OT - I love powerful metaphors :D

How about a child? How does a child learns? Does the parents do not need to teach those little ducklings? Do they need to go out without knowing what they are doing or should they learn first.

Magicians who created original effects can be compared as a genius.(Exceptions for those who just derived tricks from the basics) Do you need to be a genius to learn a trick?

lot of different opinions here, i personally get annoyed by magic exposure but, like so many have said, if a trick is done well then the spec will have no clue how to do it. Ive done tricks on my friends before who know of certain sleights but have never caught what im doing, even though they can perform it themselves. So the important thing about this is that we have to work hard at our craft to stay one step ahead of the exposers :D
