Back From Salou - Piccies of Magicians and a Few Questions

Postby moonbeam » Oct 4th, '07, 02:21

Well I hope the weather hasn't been too bad (no, honestly I do  )

I had a great time and I went along to the "House of Illusion" and watched a magic show - really enjoyable. I got talking to one guy and I told him that I was a member on TM and he chirped up "oh, you'll know Bananafish then ??" That felt stange lol  . I can't remember his name although I think he said he was a member on MagicBunny (not too sure to be honest).

Anyway I saw the "Taylor Made Book Test" (never heard of it before, to be quite honest) and it was performed by Dave Taylor himself - I even got a piccie with him .... oooh I feel special now.

Does anyone have this book test and care to review it plzz :?: available here from Alakazam

Also saw a trick called "Phil Deck Plus" (I think that's what it was called :? ). I was "slightly" drunk so I kinda lost the plot on this one. Does anyone have this and care to review it plzz - although I think I remember what was going on, I just need something clearing up  .

To be honest these guys were wicked. I think my favourite just has to be Mat Edwards - saw him a few times in different bars and I totally enjoyed every show he did  . He just seemed to ooze confidence and his performance combined many traits such as humour, wit, magical prowess, crowd control - his ability to motivate the crowd was great. He performed quite a diverse range of tricks too - cards, balloons, soap bubbles, a puppet (absolutely hilarious), use of a TT .... as you can probably guess, I enjoyed it immensely :D .

I got a few piccies but I missed a few - prob too drunk lol  . I wanted one of me and Rodney James Piper (House of Illusion owner I think) and Adam Parsons (Manager I think) but I'm happy with what I manged to get  .

Welcome back and thanks for posting the pics.

Yes - I agree with you the House of Illusion is a fantastic place run by a great team of guys. Rodney, Matt et all do a great job. There should be more places like that in the world. There really should be.

Anyone going to Spain - even close to Salou should defnitely make the ffort to go along. They really love visiting magicians to pop in, and frequently have some awesome guest stars.

Matt is a funny bloke. He appeared at the Ipswich Magical Society Convention last year (with Bubbles), and hopefully he will be back this year for a slot in the close-up section. Anyone who has seen him perofrm knows how charismatic he is. I assume you saw his balloon swallow?

I know Burmley is a fair trek away, but if would be great to see you at the convention.

Phil Plus doesn't need a review - just get it. There is also Phil and a customisable Phil that are worth considering.

Phil is a classic in teh same way as an ID is. You will use it.

There's also (I'm pretty sure?) a regular deck version of Phil in the Dave Campbell Legacy book.

Totally agree with bananafish, You will use this. I do and get great reactions!

Trilogy is also simliar although with a different plotline

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

I also enjoyed my time at the HOI this summer. I went to see my friend Will Houston perform, and a few weeks later spent the day with Will, Matt Edwards and his girlfriend. We roamed around Barcelona trying to find a magic shop that was hidden away in a very quiet area of Barca - we eventually found it, and had a wonderful afternoon, we were taken into a 'secret' office and spent a long time chatting to the owner. I ended up exhausted after a day of translating between Spanish and English. Fortunately I didn't need to for Matt, as his Spanish is good. Matt and Will are great fun to hang out with, and excellent magicians.

Trevor Duffy - Phil Plus - Which is Based on Phil Goldstein and Trevor Duffy's 'Phil', In which you predict a girl name on a thought of card. The second part is a girls name is choosen on which you name the card value.
10 out of 10 for spectator reaction.

Phil Plus 'Blank' is great for corporate work, where you can use your own names on the cards.

Thanks for the advice on the Phil Deck - I've managed to figure out how it works, although this wasn't my intention. The only downside is that you can't repeat the trick to the same spec(s), assuming my assumptions are correct. I still like this, however and I'm seriously thinking about getting this. I don't suppose it's possible to buy these on bicycle cards :?:

Has anyone any reviews of the "Taylor Made Book Test" plzz :?:

Firstly you wouldn't want to repeat any trick to the same group now would you? Having said that I know a lot o performers that do this in their close up sets (that includes me on occaison), and if you have Phil and Phil plus it can be done better at tables as tables next to each other see different results (there are always a few nosey ones aren't there?). This really is worth having both

As Darren (Magic Attic) says though for the higher paid gigs - or just special occasions it really is worth Phil Plus 'blank'

They aren't printed on Bikes - but that is easily explained. They have names written on them. Why would you ruin an expensive deck?

moonbeam wrote:Has anyone any reviews of the "Taylor Made Book Test" plzz :?:
If you saw Dave do his book test, then you don't need a review - as it plays exactly as you saw it.

I thought it was ok actually. Quite cheap for such a thing and it does work. It needs a bit of pre work so not any book anywhere anytime, but close. Having said that if you wanted a book case of a hunded books and let the audience pick one, you could do that. Using the dictionary though is particularly nice.

I've just one question regarding the Phil Plus, before I buy it.
I know that the deck is gimmicked and obviously cannot be inspected, but can the cards that are selected be tabled and handled by the spec :?:

I thought I knew how this worked, but alas, I was wrong lol  .

If anyone's interested, I've found somewhere selling these for £7.50.

available from themagicgadget

Well they could be - but personally I wouldn't do it. Just trust me it's worth getting.
