Squaring the circle

Postby taneous » May 24th, '04, 10:36

I saw this on tv once and i bought it about a year ago. Basically you show this square andf it suddenly turns into a square. It's a bit obvious as to how it works - I think, but I have found it works nicely in kid's shows. I hold up the circle and ask if they like my square. They all say "no it's a circle", I change it into a square and I say "oh ok - do youlike my circle then". And so on.
I do it a couple of times, but I'm at a loss as to how to end the routine. I usually just put it aside and go on to something else, but i really would like to have a use for it. Any suggestions?

Yes, it is kind of obvious how it works. I made one out of cardboard when I was about 11 or 12, after seeing someone do it on TV.

How about doing a prediction effect?

The child chooses a shape from a forcing bag or maybe you have some jumbo cards with shapes on them (possibly even ESP cards). It is a square.

"Don't tell me," says the magician and produces the circle. The children go wild, because the magician has got it wrong. A second later and the magician is there with the correct shape in his hands.

Then you can tell them that the circle has gone back into you magic bag (or whatever) and produce the linking ring (great suggestion that).

I think this effect is best done in a silent act I used to have my dove sitting on the circle and suddenly it turned to a square. it used to get a great reaction. Personally I wouldn't use it in a childrens show.

That must look great. How does the dove react?
