Business cards

Postby da_danny » Nov 22nd, '07, 15:56

Hey folks...

1. of december i have a new gig... and i wanna have new business cards.. i ran out of the old ones.. and I'm kinda happy about it..

well standart information should be on there of course..
but I'm not sure if i should put a picture on it ... meaning a picture of myself...

about my concept:
For me it is important that people have fun watching me... it's not about doing impossible things like levitating and so on... it's about doing magic and giving them a fun time while doing it....

maybe that helps

so long

It all depends on how you get the picture on there I think. It can work if it's done in quite an arty and subtle way.

pictures are for i.d. cards and bus passes not realy for business cards.
imo, unless you perform in a character or a clown with a registerd face then you may find people will pass you up just by the look of your face so don't give them that option, you want people to remember your magic not you, employers are fickle that way.

notable exceptions, Lady of Mystery is displaying two, one in her signature which would work well on a card and as she says is arty and a trademark like her profile pic.

My card is purple and uses a very similar image to the one in my signature, something like that can work well I think but I wouldn't go for a straight mug shot.

I have taken advice posted elsewhere on here and kept my first business cards very simple.

I just have my name, the word Magician under it and my contact details.

My name is unusual and again following advice on this forum I think that it is unusual enough to be remmeberd.

So I have just kept it plain

Da Danny,
No real reason why your business cards should NOT have your picture on them, if it's done well.
In many cases, it's the client's only connection between you, the person, and the name.
As for simplicity, Dai Vernon's cards, when he was in New York, simply said, "Dai Vernon" and below that "Magician".
No address, no phone number, no nuttin'!

But far, far more important that what's on your cards is how you give them out.
First of all, since you are supposed to be a magician, they should do something "magical". It could be something as simple as having your name and infor appear on a blank card, using the paddle move.

And, finally, the MOST imporant thing: It's not so much about you giving out your cards; after all, they are mostly tossed an hour or a day later.
It should be about you getting the client's card (or potential client). This enables you to call him or her or to send a promo package.

cheers,

Maybe something simple, chrome text on matte black:

Image

Left: Front of card
Right: Rear of card

Just a thought but if you're having a picture, why not make it something fun like an optical illusion, or maybe have an impossible frame around the border (like the renault symbol).

If your act includes a lot of mentalism you could even have one of those swimming patterns (google gave me http://www.gamearea.co.uk/games/images/ ... ons-03.gif). This isn't animated, it just uses how the eye scans the page to make it move.

Another thought is you could scout around for interesting Ambigram fonts and make something like Derren Brown's Trick of Treat cards saying "Your Name" and "Magician".

Lastly, if you go with black cards, you could always roll them into top hats and fill em with sponge rabbits.

Right, that's enough silly comments from me. If anyone has any more I'll be in the pub! Have a nice weekend everyone!
