I just don't know how this became all about America? I just mentioned Texas as a cracking example of how capital punishment is an ineffective crime deterrent.
As far as Americas state of democracy goes though....he was voted in twice by the people and even though he is a complete numpty (at best) at least there are freely held elections all afforded to us by secular democracy. Some have not even that luxury

Infidel: My Life by Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a great book which can teach us all how lucky we all really are

This is true. Mr Priest is not the goverment and only has the oppotunty to vote once every 5 years like the rest of the population. I take it you do vote?

There for he cant be held accountable for what people who have been elected to run the country for him if they decide not to have his best interest at heart.

Yes, I do vote. I have never voted for Bush. But to actual original subject, it is horrible what is committed every day in our world. It is even worse that it is ignored or overlooked for monetary reasons. I must apologize for being defensive about certain comments, my son recently returned from Iraq and my views of alot of things in that region and the warmonger we have for a leader, and the crimes like this that are ignored... but I digress. Note to self:stop freaking out.

Last year at our wedding, we were privileged to have as our guests some dear friends from the US, plus their two kiddies.

On 'gift-boxing day'... the day after the wedding, we spent lunchtime with them.

During the conversations, the subject of Chavs popped up. My father-in-law was asked "Hey, what's a chav then?" by the youngest of the two American kids...

His description, although concise, was a good way to sum up how badly society is going to the dogs, and I have used his definition several times since:

my father in law wrote:Take all the horrible qualities of the nastiest kids you remember at school. Give them a cigarette behind the ear, tracksuit tops, burberry caps. Now, remove their ability to read or write properly, and remove 90% of their vocabulary—leaving only profanities.
Now, imagine the sort of person who would mug an old woman AND THEN spit on her. Imagine the sort of idiot who wears a thick gold chain around their neck but can't afford to pay for it. Imagine the sort of kid who asks you to buy them alcohol or cigarettes for them, and then hurls abuse at you as you decline.
Imagine an uneducated scavenger with no respect for their parents, elders or the law... and who believe they are justified in existing alongside us as 'equals'.
In a nutshell, the chavs are all of the above, and are taking the 'Great' out of Great Britain.

That's pretty much how the dialogue goes. I add a bit here and there now and then, as new topical info comes up.

I see this a lot online.

When Brits refer to 'America' in posts like this, they mean the American government. The political decision makers - and, most commonly, official foreign policy.

But when American people see the word, they often take it to mean them personally.

It's like talking about Britiain or the British. I'm British, but I don't claim to represent the nation or make decisions on its behalf, so I don't answer to the name of Britain...

Britain followed America into Iraq. That's true. But I marched against the war and opposed it from the beginning. Many other Brits did the same.

Just an observation.

You're right, the average US citizen is far too concerned with who Tom Cruise is going out with what's going to happen in Lost than to be concerned about what their government is doing.

Hey maybe I could become a journalist now that investigation and exposing injustice has been replaced with 'celeb' news.

Love the description of a chav there Seige. Could that be sent to the oxford english disctionary people as the new description?

We're the same over here. Too worried about who is going to win Big Brother and what Victoria Beckham is wearing whilst the government removes any last traces of freedom we had.
