I think the whole thing could have paid homage to magic and refer the readers to the books without using exposure. They reference the books in the beginning and then splash good methods and effects that are staples of the trade throughout the 28 pages. 50 tricks are promised for the Observer tomorrow. David Blaine endorses the whole thing with the opening story.

Markdini: if you knew ANYTHING about human rights you might like to know that you have them as well, and they may just come in handy for you someday. Rights cut both ways.

For more, see my book with Routledge (2006) Studying Human Rights and for those who like stats, see my book Protecting Human Rights (Georgetown Universoity Press 2005)...you could also read Andrew Clapham's brilliant Human Rights: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford 2007)...or better yet, come to Essex University and STUDY human rights. You might LEARN something.

As for the Guardian, it is one of many on my regular reading list along with The Economist...it's called getting a balanced view.

Or, you could put your head in a change bag

Of course I have human rights I am protected as an Englishman by her Royal britanic majasteys goverment. For being an Englishman is a divine right.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Great...a nationalist and royalist as well...yippee....

It is interesting to note that Marx was hostile to the idea of rights and saw them as those things that only benefitted the bourgeoisie (so not sure about your assertion that supporters of rights are communists), and the Lockean tradition is one which is borne of the demand for property rights against the monarch, so rights have been a vehicle for protecting freedom against divine right, ascription, and tyranny.

As for exposure of magic, I think mulitple letters to the Guardian are in order here. Collectively, we should be able to flood the paper with complaints. Fortunately, the general public has a short memory and will not have the will to practice many of these effects. The up side, as many have said here before is that all this keeps us on our toes!

If men wasnt Nationalist and Royalist then we would have been under Nazi rule now.

I do agree with the Good Dr that if one is inclined to do so write in to the Guardian.

if we're going off topic, wars are very rarely won by people who believe or are nationlistic or royalist...they went to war 'cos they were told and forced too...nothing else...

did you know Hugo Boss design the nazi uniform?

and hitler had a group of designers and artists who came up with the red, white and black colour scheme for the inverted peace symbol/swastika...

inverting any positive symbol, causes the opposite...hence the inverted cross to symbolise devilry...

anyway, red, black and white...you see it in tabloids, some road signs, and...gulp....coca cola...

the 3 most powerful colours to be put together ever...soften in the 90s to blue/orange/white...like....gulp....this place!

strange what you learn when you had a wierd history of art tutor..

I find it highly ironic that one who wants 'proof' of psychic phenomena (see numerous other threads), will uncritically accept the divine rule of a monarch.

I also enjoy the historic myopia about the oppression led by the expansion of an empire based precisely on the notions of nationalism and royalism.

I have written to the Guardian this morning.

Dear Guardian

As a regular reader, I was deeply dismayed to see such full exposure of classic methods and effects from the world of magic and conjuring in a special 28-page pullout feature in yesterday's Guardian. There is a large community of magicians and mystery entertainers who make a living by using these methods and effects on a daily basis.

Full exposure such as the one you published yesterday and the Observer will publish today only undermines the intellectual capital of magic practitioners who have in many cases spent a lifetime practicing, developing, and learning.

These same practitioners are formally organised through such entities as the Magic Circle (www.themagiccircle.co.uk), The International Brotherhood of Magicians (www.magician.org), and the British Society of Mystery Entertainers (www.psycrets.org.uk), all of which have codes of conduct with respect to exposure and have expelled their members for engaging in such practices.

The endorsement of David Blaine does not in any way protect the Guardian. A full feature on the different traditions of magic and mystery entertainment with relevant citations to classic books on the subject would have raised awareness of our craft without reverting to blatant exposure, the ideas of which are not yours to expose.

I hope that in the future, you are more judicious in the development of your features so as to avoid alienating your readers and in this case, protecting the livelihood of those engaged in this particular sector of the entertainment industry.

Unfortunately I think the books are in the public domain, which is what allowed the new(ish) Dover publications of them, although I may be utterly wrong on that front.

I notice how those from the US are jealous of our wonderful monarch as they don't have one themselves. Instead, they flock here, with golfing slacks on, a huge camera around their neck and proclaim in a loud voice that everything is bigger over there.
Except for history. Ours is bigger and better.

God save the queen! These damn liberals are a disgrace to the Empire!

Depends on what you mean by liberal. The liberal tradition is much more tied to today's form of conservativism. Not jealous of your queen, I do however question her authority as it is not derived from legal rational means in the Weberian sense, an idea nicely captured in Monty Python's Holy Grail when the woman says to Arthur...'our King, well I never voted for you...'

Your history is indeed bigger and in many ways more fascinating, which is one of the reasons I love living here, paying loads of tax, and not being able to vote (notice I used the Oxford comma)
