Postby magicman777 » Dec 28th, '07, 04:51

can anyone control the overhand shuffle really well? there are a lot of different things you can do with it. i just want to know how long it took you all to master it. it is a very difficult sleight.

most folks if they have went down the royal road can do this so it is second nature. Id say about a week to have it spot on with controling an injoged card maintaining top stock etc :D

Agreed. I took me just under a week of practice directed *specifically* at the overhand shuffle and the controls to get it down, but now I find that whenever I'm holding a pack of cards, I can't help going through some of the controls anyway...

I was never happy with the injog; I prefer the overhand lift shuffle, which you can find later in RRTCM.

Ever since I first picked up a deck of cards I was using the overhand shuffle naturally so when it came to tricks using it I found it quite easy.

RRTCM shone a light on new ways to control.

Again, found it very easy to pick up (with RRTCM's tuition). A week or so if daily practice will nail it for you so it becomes second nature.
It's simple to control cards with this shuffle.

overhand shuffle

Postby spudgun » Dec 28th, '07, 22:00

i think the most important thing to do though is to practice in a slow and methodical way at first. (im sort of reading between the lines that currently the shuffle is hopeless, but thats cool, there will always be the "feeling like a tit" stage with something that requires quite sophisticated fine motor skill)

So....be slow and deliberate making sure the technique isnt flawed and your not kidding yourself on its a "new improved handling etc" and just steadily increase in pace. I would in my humble opinion say that this is the best way to go about it as if you learn to do something "wrongly" (like ive done) its a bitch to relearn the right way...i gaurantee that once your doing it right you will find it hard to fairly shuffle cards again and will constantly move the top to the back ect.....have fun :D .....(and sorry if thats a little long winded)

Great advice. Also try to focus on one thing at a time. Like you first stated there is a lot you can do and a lot of controls, don't try to learn them all at once. And it really didn't take me all that long, but its been so long and my memory fades.

Yes the overhand shuffle shouldn't be taking you long to get, especially the in-jog control. I definately agree with spudgun. Move your hands as slow as possible. It will feel strange and you will want to speed up but don't. I think it's pretty safe to say that goes for all sleights. But good luck with it :D
