any size that comftably wraps the deck, probaly a 8-10 inch silk.

colour dosnt matter just make sure it si opaque (non see through).

best advice buy a silk scarf from a charity shop, ladies neck scarf would be ideal and come in some realy guady colours and patterns.

shove it round your neck then say dont think it'll suit me but i have it anyway, works for me.

my first production silks were all scarfs so dont let it worry you if you are show them a trick then ask were there scarfs are.

Tricks involving a vanish via a TT usually use a 6" or 9" silk and if you check out http://www.emagictricks.co.uk/product_i ... ts_id=4634 they are one hell of a bargain at £1.20 each plus P&P. I've just received a set and the colours are 2 x Orange, Day-Glo Purple, Turquoise Blue, Black, 2 x Yellow, 2 x Royal Blue, and Green.

You could also have a look at any market stalls selling fabric off the roll as they may very well have the sort of thing you need for a particular effect. There are one or two good fabric shops near to Birmingham city centre and fabrics with Chinese letters, bright colours and patterns etc are no problem - spoiled for choice really. There's bound to be a similar kind of shop somewhere in your area. Our main one deals a lot in fabrics and patterns for fancy dress/theatrical costumes so they don't bat an eyelid if a geezer starts asking about traditionally feminine fabrics so silky scarf-like material would be equally catered for!

and telling everyone that the playing card is going to go through the silk is " normal"?
you could always say you need it for a costume in a play, or that it's for your mother, Gran etc. Or you could admit to being a closet Gypsy fortune teller.
Or maybe even, a magician, and show them a trick too.
Nah, thats a bit far fetched. :)

Colour can be more important than you realise

Postby Pedey » Apr 2nd, '04, 23:59

PCWizMe,

as your original reply says, no the size doesn't matter - so long as it covers your deck. The trick you are suggesting in your original post would require some work for you to get the card outside the silk.

The colour doesn't matter for the effect you are asking about. However, consider that you are looking at coming up with a routine where you are not just trying to perform your trick, but putting several tricks together to make up a logical series of effects (a routine!) ...

You should therefore look at the colour of your silk in this scenario. Perhaps you remove a red rose from your lapel using established utility items, then you would use a red silk perhaps for your card routine before, perhaps, changing it to a white one where you produce a dove or two.

Different colour silks are available from your favourite magic dealer. To be honest, they are wildly overpriced in this day and age, however if you would like the advice you asked for - get some 18 inch silks and take good care of them (rather than buying smaller, cheaper silks and discovering that they are too small to be used.)

Silks

But some small ones may still be needed. For example, if you trap a coin in silk/hankerchief (somewhere in Bobo--I wish someone else would help me find it to review) by slipping a ring over silk. If silk is too big the ring will not seat down toward the coin.
Small ones may also be needed as loads. Adding a silk production to Ball&Tube is grand!
