I can think of nary a better birthday present. Get it on that list, I'd say, preferably in the top spot.

I believe this is the best instructional DVD on card tricks out there. Begginers could buy this, but don't expect to be good at it immediately. Zamiel's Rose? Eeek! The effects on this video can also be done using regular playing cards with some excemptions like Smoke. It also has some of Derren's own variation of classic tricks like OOTW, which I find rather elegant than the original.

True classic. Plus it has the star quality in it. Hey, it's Derren Brown!

yeah i agree there's lots of stuff in this vid for beginners too and it's great to see how a professional makes it looks so easy.. something to aspire to.
i reckon the 'mike's move' bit and the velvet turnover/lateral palm move are fairly straight forward for a beginner to be able to do that you could use for some basic routines.. plus the invisible deal trick worked first time i tried it on someone which amazed me .. great buzz when something like that works.. second time i tried it it didn't, but the person i tried it on was quite drunk, as was i, which thought me a lesson about trying to do magic tricks while inebriated.. not really a good idea.

I would just like to stick my opinion on the whole question entering thing.
The second i saw it i smiled and thought of Derren asking me the question. It is so him.

When one involves themself and immerses in the magical world, you will definately and i mean DEFINATELY of come across this "eugene" thing before.

Mr. Brown is no fool. An expert in...EVERYTHING. Writing, painting, coins, cards, misdirection, hypnotism, suggestion..blah blah blah.
He is not about to make a silly mistake by handing out all his precious work to spoint rich brats who have experianced youtube tutorials.

Read, learn then come back.

Just to rub it in..its absolutely amazing :P

I finally gave in to temptation and bought the 2 disc DVD set on Monday. As Derren is currently on tour, I understand that it will be delayed, however I was wondering if any of you bought it when he was last on tour and how long you had to wait? Oh the agony of waiting.............

Don't worry dude, I ordered a copy about 2 weeks ago and got the same "on tour delay" message but it arrived in about 4-5 working days so either I lucked out or you'll be fine too!

As a side note it really is an awesome set of DVD's and really gives you an insight into Derren Brown's origins as 'just' a magician, His 3 card trick is phenominal and will take me a while to master...

Enjoy

He is good at misdirections, a master sleight as well. A lot of people does not know this.

Well, people doesn't really need to know. Mr. Brown was specific on his book that you do not have to tell them you are good at say...pickpocketing. Magic is always about performance. So having the spectator's watch at your hands would be very strange indeed.

My copy came yesterday, and I managed to sit through most of it yesterday. I must say, that from just a single viewing so far, I can conclude this:

IT IS WORTH EVEY PENNY

I'm not going to even try to give some sort of a review, as I'd only be restating the comments on this already long thread. But I will say this:

The effects themselves are BEAUTIFUL (His three card routine is wonderful)

Browns explenations are wonderfully detailed and full of little timings with references to the off-beats and the building up of tension.

And Brown's passion for this beautiful branch of magic is spilling over in every sentence. He refers freely to the likes of Green, Mullica and Vernon as well as many others. I take a quote from the back of the DVD case (and there is a running order there now):

"Get ready to change the way you perform magic"

Oh yes, get ready. You're in for the ride of your life..... Thanks to all that recommended this. Otherwise, I still wouldn't have a clue what Derren did when he was "only" a card man.

Hey mandrake, do you ever get bored telling people to use the search function? I imagine it's gotta get quite frustrating...
