I would think getting into restaraunt magic at 15 was going to be tough. Even if you showed you had the magic skills I would imagine a restaraunt owner would wonder if you had the neccessary people skills. For example you have asked what to say going up to people on the street, so as not to look an idiot, well in the same way by not knowing what to say and how to deal with people which only comes with experience you can make a restaurant look bad.

Children's parties on the other hand would have far less resistance to your age and might be something you would consider and would be a great grounding to many other forms of magic entertainment.

Of course as you get known as a good magician in your area all kind of doors may open.

I tend to agree with all Happy Toad said, but if it is somewhere you seriously want to do at this stage, then I would recommend you read all of the relevant Scott Guinn's articles on online-visions.

Ben, Restaurant Magic is probably one of the most adult forms of magic. I don't mean that you have to perfrom explicit or rude routines but it does mean that you have to be a mature and secure performer to be succesful. I'm not suggesting that your an imature performer because I've never seen you perform but if this is the first time you're going commercial, particularly at 15, you're really jumping in at the deep end.

However, this doesn't mean that getting into restauranr magic is an impossibility, I know a couple of guys who do it and they're not much older than you. One of them is "full time" in one restaurant and another does strolling magic for hire.

The bottom line, like Happy Toad says, is you have to be ready to be a restaurant performer and the only way to be ready is to have lots of perfroming experience. Basically practise practise practise.

MAybe you should try something a little less challenging first, something you can deal with.

All the best,

Will Wood

http://www.performers.net/ check here for more sage advice.

as a kids entertainer thats doing table hopping a have to echo what has been said people in resturants have paid for there meal and expect any entertainment to be of high quality, add to that the booze element and you need to be a confident performer to work in situations were you are total alone and vunerable.
its also worth bearing in mind that the audience tend to relate to people there own age especialy after a few jars and you need to take into account the intoxification effect in your routineing, effect pauses are more important to let an effect sink in and although you don't need to so tight with your slieghts with adults you still can get caught out.

your tricks will depend on what type of venue your working at, wether you are actualy table hopping or working for a table and what your proficiencys are, let us know and we will try to help.

daryl's fooler doolers will help you with the trick aspect especialy volumes one to three.

Hi Ben, I've been doing magic for 10 years now (full-time resturant magician for 2 years) I started working there as a waiter for a bit then I left to concentrate on my magic. About a year later they phoned me up and asked me to do magic for them and i've been working there ever since. You are working mainly with adults and it always keeps you on your toes as you always get some drunk guy trying to catch you out so you do have to be confident in what you are doing (but it is fun) :D

and you also get lots of drinks brought for you, but as your only 15 I guess you would have to have cokes :(

The other advice I could give you is to make a five minute video of you performing and give it to a few resturants, if they like it they may hire you

It's 'restaurant' man. Restaurant.

Lots of dodgy spelling going on here from everyone.

Just thought you'd like to know in case you wrote the restaurant a letter asking to do magic.

I'm not trying to catch you out. I have your best interests at heart.

Yes, drunken folk are funny. Just beware, they can turn very quickly.

Good luck fella

mark /boywonder does mostly clubs and standup events by my reconing which are diferent to resturants and pubs.

best advice i can give you is what was given to me, your bussines card is your ambassidor so make it clear and consice and built to last, hence my new ones being plastic.

personal apearences are better than stock letters, a letter as a backup is always welcome aswell as a cv.
check out http://www.performers.net/ for sales letters and advice about performing from performers to performers :P .

A little bird tells me that Mark is about to start a job in a related type of establishment which will give him ample opportunity to show a few miracles to the customers. I'll say no more as it will steal his thunder but a very noisy but heartfelt 'Well done & best of luck' from us all at TM would be most welcome.
