Hypnotherapists

No, seriously.
So, my girlfriend needs to stop clicking her shoulders. she's always rolling/stretching her shoulders and making clicky noises in an attempt to stop them hurting, but now it's got to the point where she does is so habitually that it's no longer helping the matter. A few years back she had a bad back and clicked her shoulders a lot, now it seems to be the clicking that makes it worse, then she does it to stop them hurting, it;s madness!. I'm thinking of sending her to hypnotherapist or something to try and get her out of the habit in the hope that her not messing her shoulders about for a while (well, perhaps doing a little theraputic stretching/swimming) will actually stop them hurting finally.
Given that I have no experience in this area and generally find the idea of hypnosis laughable I turn to you guys for advice. Would it actually be benefical? Are there any reputable hypnotherapists in the Leeds area? Do any of them have the relevant medical qualifications to make a non-hypnotic assesment of her problem befor hand and decide wether it would be a good idea or not? the usual jazz.

additional: we've seen doctors about it and they invariably end up just shrugging their shoulders at us so now I turn to something I wouldn't usually turn to.

Could she just get a job as a metronome?

Ask Paul Brook he does this type of thing, and pops up on a forum when he sees his name on a thread.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Well hypnosis worked for me. I used the Paul McKenna system to stop smoking.

I am studying Curative Hypnotherapy - a good starting point may be the website Hypnotherapistregister.com

Hypnosis can work I think, but the Paul McKenna stop smoking book/CD was useless for me =/

I once (when I was eleven years old) stayed in a small holiday resort where the guy who ran the place was also a hypnotist. As I rememer he talked about it a lot, but refused to hypnotise me on the grounds that I would resist and so it wouldn't work. I remember thinking, yeah right, as if I'd resist and thereby miss out on the experience.

(Actually, for reasons I won't mention just now I have a suspicion that I would be quite susceptible to hypnotism.)

A couple of friends of mine went to a hypnotherapist to stop smoking. One when from about 40 a day to zero in one session. She's not had one in 2 years. The other has the odd one when we're out but not anything like she used to.

Found a couple.
Can someone advise an average price for a session please? Don't want to go spending too over over the usual.
And don't want to going to one of the suspiciously cheap ones either.

Don´t know about prices but I downloaded some (various titles) quite cheaply and they seem to work but you have to be in right mood I think. Whether it was relaxing or I went under i´m not sure but I remember waking my eyes very quickly and being suprised that I did what it said!

I wouldn't suggest you trying to learn hypnotism in order to hypnotize her. It would probably be a waste of your money, and I don't think that's what you're looking for anyway. As for will it work or not? That depends on her. If she open to suggestion, and actually has a want to stop, then there is a good chance that it will. However, hypnotherapy is not a 100% thing. So make sure that she is willing, and wants to have this done.

It was her suggestion so there's no issue there. I've sorted out a couple of potentials, now I just need to know i won't be paying too much, or too little

At the risk of starting something which may go out of control, did anyone see the Mythbusters episode on Discovery tonight?

The myth that people can be made to do something against their will was put to the test and a hypnotist tried to put three of their researchers/presenters into a state whereby a post hypnotic suggestion could be implanted. Two of them couldn't be put under but the third one was. An ECG machine showed when brain activity slowed to 50% that the subject was 'under'. Two key phrases were implanted to make the guy do something unusual and the day afterwards these words were uttered. Nothing happened other than the guy felt a little weird but he certainly didn't do what was suggested.

As a follow up, Adam and Jamie, the main guys on that show, arranged for a dramatic and controversial scenario with actors to be enacted in the presence of the three others and they were asked to recall as much as possible afterwards. Having done so they were all placed under hypnosis, very similar to the Derren Brown style of flooding the brain with conflicting commands and then the command to sleep. All three went 'under' and all three were asked the same questions about the drama. All three recalled more information than before, even stuff they denied seeing or remembering. Hypnosis or not? I'm still unsure but it seemed to show that by placing the subjects in relaxed and isolated state, the unconscious memories could be accessed and recalled.
